Led Zep '73 live tone, is this close ?

I am trying to nail the '73 live tone. I know this isn't right, but I would be interested in some constructive criticism as to why this isn't right and what frequencies to pull or push if I add a studio EQ after the cab. This "sort of" fits but just not "there" yet.

My tone starts 11 seconds in.

not bad at all...I think your tone is a tiny bit more "honky" when compared side by side. what guitar/amp were you using?

The guitar is an Epiphone Les Paul with http://www.wcrguitar.com/ pickups (darkburst in the bridge and crossroads in the neck), they are a bit on the honky side, and very bright too. I also have the full Jimmy Page wiring with all the push-pull pots etc for coil tapping, but this test was all in humbucker mode. What frequency would you say the honk is ?

The amp is a profile of my JCA20H, which is a bit on the honky side too :) Just need to find the right studio eq sculpting

It's funny how our perception of recorded guitar sounds is so wrong when taken in isolation. What seems like a good tone when I started this process was actually way too full of bass. It sounded ok on it's own, but then when I started to compare it with the album track the required tone really has virtually no bass to it at all. Sounds odd when you play it in isolation, but then in a track it fits.

Have you tried changing the cab of your profile...that's the best place to change the EQ.
Run through the Till's 1960 cabs until you hit on the one where the EQ matches the original Zep tone more closely.
You've definitely got the 'live' feel going on, just need to remove the 'boxy cab honk', IMO.

Well it's quite a challenge you're giving yourself, you're close, maybe a different Profile instead of yours?

Yes, I will give that a go with a different amp. The JCA20H is a very bright amp, too bright I think, this was profiled with the treble on the amp almost off !

Tad too thin ---->||<----- JonG... its got the flavor but lacks a lil' definition to fit in there IMO of course and with all due respect. I dig your playing...there isn't a supro profiled anywhere?
