Hi jamme61
You should check the Roland FS-6 Dual Footswitch. It's not MIDI, it's just an analog foot controller, but it is really small, cheap, and you can switch between rigs in browser and performance mode. Just plug it on the back of your KPA and you are ready to go. -
Take a two button momentary footswitch and connect it to the Kemper footswitch inserts at the back. Then configure it to do rig up with one and rig down with the other switch. Probably the smallest solution possible.

MIDI is MIDI, so any board will "work". You may miss something from some of them tho, such as 2-way communication, tuner function... Apart from this, some boards are able to send more that 1 command per instance. This has revealed to be quite useful in some setups, you may want to search the forum for this.
OTOH, if you are enough with the basic operation and don't miss the above-mentioned features, any board will do

I wasn't sure if it would work without the two way comunication but, I understand now. Thanks for the help

if you can find on ebay a digitech mc7 take it. Thin, light and small. I have one and love the small footprint.

The part missing will be everything that the device would send back to the board, such as pedal status, tuner... but the KPA would respond to any (single) command with any MIDI board
