Spring reverb, again, again, again.....

  • At the Frankfurt Roadshow I heard rumors of a spring reverb implementation being worked on.
    First thought: Wow, finally! Yeah!
But then I heard some details I simply can't believe ... it's just to crazy for my little brain.
It was said that the Kemper has a little shock sensor inside like most smartphones have. And this shock sensor could/would be used to modulate the spring reverb simulation when you bang with your hand on your Profiler ... just like you could do with real spring reverbs. Is that crazy enough to have serious doubts about this?
Maybe Christoph isn't just a technical genius but also a genius in leaking hoaxes? I really don't know what to think about this. But nevertheless I wanted to share this with you guys.

Interesting. But what would that be good for? ;)

I saw a surf band once where one of the guitarists every once in a while jumped down hard on the stage next to his amp to excite the springs. Cool effect, though not very essential :)

i would think this is just a rumour. After all, a smartphone doesn't need to be slapped hard to register the shock, but the profiler is like 10 kilos of solid german engineering... Unless you put it in a shock mount you'd have to kick it pretty hard, I guess... Not something I'd want to do. Not those guys having it in a rack with 10 other pieces of gear ;)

Tremolo Beergut kick their reverb tanks every now and again mid-song for that surf wash effect:)

There are several Spring Reverb VST's available. I tried out the PSP version and it's rather good IMO. I haven't tried the one I've linked to here but I'm mentioning it because it does have a 'slap the tank' slider.....

So, even if the motion sensor thing is a joke (which I think is 99% likely but can't discount it :) ) then all is not lost. We could have a button in the menu to slap the tank :)

Although please please please don't delay it to add this feature - a nice spring reverb is one of the very few things that (for me personally) is missing. Kemper is *almost* perfect for me and just a couple of things would make it 100% for my needs....

The other thing? 'Delays for idiots who don't want to tweak' is what I'd like..... Basically, the Strymon Timeline has lots of different delay types so you can get in the zone of tape delay, analogue delay, digital delay, lo-fi delays etc. I know you can get pretty close if you learn how to tweak the delays within the Kemper but I'm all for ease of use. And I guess we all are to an extent - with tweaking, we can make two different makes of amp sound the same but we still chose to load the profile that tells us it's a Marshall. It makes us feel better. I'd feel better if there were delays that said 'tape', 'analogue' etc. You could say that I'm being shallow. Or you could say that this is clearly a common requirement as it is the approach given by most manufacturers.

And I'd like an editor but TBH the real revolution for me was the librarian. That software has made a big difference for me.

And finally? The ability to put delays / reverbs into any slot. I'd have thought this one would be easy? I cannot see a down side - am I missing something?

have you tried using the local presets? (select The Delay, turn 'Browse')

  • have you tried using the local presets? (select The Delay, turn 'Browse')

I have and they are good.

But the Kemper is (IMO) the best device in the world at making the sound of a real amp. Apart from a real amp :) If you asked a hundred people on this forum if they believed this to be true, I'd bet that 95% of them or more would agree.

If you asked the same hundred people 'what is the best digital delay in the world', I don't think you'd be getting many votes for the Kemper.

This isn't a complaint - it's saying that you're clearly brilliant in the product niche you are in. You have got 7 different distortion boxes in the Kemper, all of which can be tweaked. With the delays, you have 3 types really (digital, analogue and dual) despite the wide range of different technology out there to create delay. If Strymon can make money selling Timeline, clearly this says that there is a market for 12 different flavours of delay, all tweakable. It'd be nice to have a few more basic flavours which can then create presets.

  • I am not sure Strymon pedals sell because of the number of "flavours" they offer, as much as for the level of detail of their emulation... and the KPA does that in the amp emulation field. I find the KPA effects ok, but in most cases I use in fact Strymon (and love them). Of course, should the Kemper crew find a way to profile effects... :P

Very true. And that's what I'm getting at - the Strymons are doing good things in small pedals with SHARC chips. Knowing what the power in the Kemper can do with amps, I'm sure it could do better with its delays. They are not bad but could improve :)
