If this is legit, you should consider getting that new LP you lust for before too long.....

  • Glad that I got my Gibson Collection pretty much taken care over the years, ah hell always room for another 1 or 2 though. Lacking the Flying V and an Explorer and I will be content. ;)

  • People will hate me, but I think LP's are so overrated and massively overpriced already...

I have a Yamaha SG which I think plays and sounds so much better...

I'd go Tokai, doesn't matter what the headstock says..

    Each to their own though.

  • It's a shame really.

It's one of those things where non-fans of Gibson will say 'these things are way overpriced anyway'. Gibson fans will feel like their club just got even more exclusive.

If you're looking at it from the pure business perspective then the right price for your product is 'whatever the market will accept'. I suppose the company is in the situation where, no matter what they charge, the products will sell and if that's the case, they want to make as much money as possible. It is either 'complete business sense' or 'greed' depending which side of the fence you're on. The only time this will change is if the Gibson's stop selling and they don't, despite the fact that many other companies do very, very similar products that are cheaper and, in some cases, superior.

What can you say? I work with a guy who paid about £500 for an overnight bag because of the designer label. I thought it was a pretty ugly bag to be honest and I would have had no idea whatsoever of the pricetag until he told me. At that point I choked on my beer. I was using a rucksack that I'd had for years. It still carried my things in the same way and no-one threw me out of the hotel. Equally, I've never been thrown off stage for using an Indonesian G&L Telecaster as opposed to breaking out the 'real one'. No-one, except some guitarists, gives a rat's arse. As a bunch of musicians, we do this to ourselves.

I don't actually own a Gibson so perhaps my perspective is different. I do own a Burny copy and I have a PRS Stripped '58 which is my favourite guitar. From where I'm sat, I don't see a compelling reason to give Gibson any money. Perhaps that's just me?

  • Yes, it's all about market value. The instruments themself don't worth half the prices asked IMO but if you can sell them they have a market value.

Some luthier guitars really worth much more money because of their uniqueness and amazing quality but they are more difficult to sell than a Gibson. The fact that the vintage Gibsons are highly collectible give the feeling to the buyer that buying their guitars is an investment, which, until now, is thru!

  • Very true Gary and Pick909, it's down to what the market will pay.

No doubt they are good guitars and good on em if they can get it. Also makes resale values strong.

But I just think people should look at other options rather than just what the headstock says.I'd rather have a musicman Axis...I also had a custom guitar made and it was a fantastic experience and cost less then a LP, but it is unique to me and would be difficult to sell on for anything close to what I paid I suspect. Good job its staying with me for life.

So it's all down to personal preference and if you want one that much, you'll pay for it. The higher price might even make it feel more special/magical..

  • Having bought , owned and resold quite many Gibson guitars, I think the best value with them is to buy used SG & Les Paul's from years 1989-2001 (those with the pink interior case). Just make sure they are still in good condition.

  • Yeah, having a couple of PRS guitars myself (a used CE and a new BM signature) - and being a weird hippie-conservative socialist/capitalist cyborg, I wholeheartedly agree that the correct price is what the market "accepts". If value to customer exceeds the price tag, the customer is happy; and the higher the ratio, the happier the customer. This includes intangibles such as brand loyalty/hype considerations etc.

Where I MAY see some issues here (Gibson's issues, not ours as potential customers) is that based thoroughly on hearsay, Gibson's quality (or quality control) is wildly fluctuating. I don't know if this is true still, but that's what I've heard. Whereas what Ive heard with regards to PRS is that quality is very consistent. Again, hearsay. And bias. Maybe still valid.

The biggest thing here is that a 29% increase IN ONE YEAR just strikes me as crazy in every way. I'm really interested to see how the market will react. I know I won't get one of them. At that price I'd probably rather get another lawyer/dentist guitar :D (PRS)

  • I've had bad experiences with Gibson which is why I wouldn't ever buy one again. My first was when I was around 17 I purchased a double cut away for around £1100 it looked lovely but the build quality was awful slowly it started to fall apart so I traded it in for another PRS :) my other experience was around 10 years ago being a big Zakk Wylde fan back then I purchased a bulls eye Zakk Wylde modal this was the worst experience I've ever encounted. It cost me £2500 back then and with in a month the lacquer started to peel off on the body. I took it back to where I brought it from who had to order another one in which took 2 months, when it arrived the truss rod cover had been screwed in to tight that the head stock lacquer was cracked, so again I had to wait 2 months for another replacement. This one arrived ok but later on down the line around about 6 months the truss rod in the neck snapped. Now for 3 guitars that cost £2500 each I would not expect things like this. Since then I've never ever thought of buying a Gibson again

  • Gibson is always hit or miss.

The ones that sound awesome are worth the price.
The ones that don't get sh*t on by guitars far less expensive.

I'd add another one to the list of more than great replacements:
    FGN.

That being said, the most awesome guitar I ever played so far was a Gibson LP Standard.
Handpicked by the player, played like butter, sounded like heaven.
    Looked delicous too.

  • I just hope this is not an early indication of what's coming with all consumer goods. It seems now the economy is bullish prices will go up...I just hope it doesn't lead to hyperinflation .
