Because the KPA has no phantom power and I have only condenser mics which require phantom power can I plug the mic
into my (small, home studio) mixer and send an out from that to the KPA?
Anybody done this?
Thanks,
Mike

Yes - many people have done that. Just be sure not to overdrive the mixer
Great, thanks mate.
Should have my KPA by Friday,
Mike
Gongrats! You are going to have fun this weekend!

yes.
however, be aware that a condenser mic 'by itself' isn't exactly the standard way to mic a (distorting) guitar amp.
dynamic mics are much more common.
but you probably already knew that.
Hi Don,
I've seen 'em miced both ways in the studio but I only have condensers.
I will rarely use a very distorted amp sound, mainly clean or slightly overdriven.
Any advice on miking distances etc?
Mike
I could imagine you might need a pad between mixer and mic to not overdrive the mixer.
Condensers are not THAT uncommon for mic'ing guitars, even if distorted.
Congratulations and good luck

absolutely.
as always in audio recording/engineering there are no rules.
if it works - it works.
Something like this works great (for little money)

In that small mixer example would I use the phones out to the KPA?
Thanks,
Mike
For around the same price as a small mixer like that or a preamp (like an ART tube for example) you could probably pick up an SM57 off Craigslist. The SM57 is not my favorite mic but its a studio staple and it's cheap. Plus if you buy it used and don't like it, flip it. SM57s are really easy to buy and sell, there's always a demand for them.

A 1/4" Main Out would be a better choice than the headphone out with that mixer.
I was rummaging around in a draw for something else and found--an SM58 which I haven't seen for about 10 years.
Plugged it in and it worked fine but had quite a low signal. Think I'll profile my JC120 with it and some different profiles with various condensers
and see which sounds best.
Hopefully pick the KPA up tomorrow, the girlfriend is getting back from France tomorrow as well but I know what my attention will be on:)
Mike
