Will only record at home w Cubase 8. Would only need to connect 2 outboard hi end preamps for vocals (great river, API a2d with SPDIF and AES) and have no need for a million channels.
Guitar and bass will go through Kemper -> SPDIF to Interface -> Cubase.
any advice would be appreciated.

I'd look into trying to buy an RME device. Rock solid drivers and superb performance, preamps are neutral and clear, though I've heard some people say they've heard better. I have one and it works flawlessly with Cubase 8. You should look into something like a Fireface 400 or a Fireface UC, which has USB as well.
Long time Cubase and RME (FF800) user myself and never had a problem with this set up.

Thank you guys. It looks like the 800 is discontinued in favor of the 802. It looks like it might be overkill for me, but I'm going to check it out. Just saw RME also sells a UCX version. Looks feature packed too for $1500 new.

I also have a Roland (Edirol) interface on my second machine. Again, rock solid drivers (Windows) and good support. Never had any issue's with this either.
I have a UCX, and it's works perfectly via spdif.

I use a Steinberg MR816 CSX. Sounds great and integrates well with Cubase.
was just offered a Lavry AD11 for $1400. I've always heard that Lavry is as good as you can get with converters. But this is only AD. Anyone has any experience with these units?

No, you can't, but according to RME: While there is no physical bypass, at 0 dB gain, signals are not affected by the pres

In that price range I can also recommend the RME fireface (ucx). Has been rock solid for me.
I also use the Roland Quad Capture via SPDIF and it works great. Also low latency for virtual instruments. PCI would be even lower but then you are talking about more money. I can't find any fault with the quad capture, but I'm not using it in a professional setup.
You can get a pci-e RME with 32 channels for about 500 ish.
