What I think we are going to need is a passive direct box without speaker emulation. There may be a good alternative out there but its probably not sold as a guitar unit. I can't find one designed for use after the amp that does not have speaker emulation which makes sense because who wants to record an amp sound before the speakers. Seems this situation does not call for an active DI, it would be to easy to overdrive it. I think a good passive DI is going to cost at least $100 if its got a good transformer in it. I'm going to wait and see what Kemper recommends. From what I can read a passive box is all about the transformer inside, if its cheap, its like a cheap mic. It may be better to pay a little more and get a good unit.

What do you think about a Peavey MSDI (switches in Reference Position) ?
http://peavey.com/products/ind…95/117104/MSDI%26trade%3B(Very good results when recording my old Deluxe Reverb in former times)

It looks like all three switch positions are still "specially voiced" in the Peavey. A DI box with no speaker simulation, or one that can disable the speaker simulation is needed.
-
Thanks paults.
It's a microphone-voiced signal no speaker simulation (or is it the same ?) -
"Microphone voiced" and "speaker simulation" are two different descriptions of "mixing console ready" signals.
A Microphone voiced/Speaker Simulation signal can be used for recording or can be sent to a mixing console. It does not contain extreme high frequencies and low frequencies, and may also contain mid range corrections.
Direct profiling requires a flat response signal. A signal with no speaker simulation is flat response - it is exactly the signal that comes out of the power amp, with the signal level is reduced.

The Mesa cab clone should work. I have one and it works very well. The DI out has cab simulation that can't be turned off but there is a line out at 4dB that is taken direct from the speaker output from the amp with no processing apart from level. Pro's - It's built like a tank also has a built in power soak so no speaker cab required at up to 150W. Totally passive with no power supply required, ground lift if needed.
Con the - price!Steve

i'd use my Avalon U5 for that.....

I just called Radial and the person I spoke with said they do not currently offer a product that can be connected between a tube amp and cabinet that has speaker simulation which can be defeated.

A Begringer Ultra-G GI100 is great, nothing more, nothing less
+1 for the Behringer Ultra-G GI100.
Road tested for over ten years by many pros.
Sturdy design, great price, great reviews and speaker emulation bypass.
Amazon (free shipping) and several other stores sell them for $39.99, maybe there are even better deals out there. -

So turns out that the Behringer Ultra G GI100 is still the best option, right?
Well cool! I have one of these sitting in my closet!
-
Cool that the speaker simulation in the Behringer Ultra-G GI100 can be defeated. Thanks for the heads up.

You can also just use the Behringer Ultra DI 100 also which doesn't have the speaker emulation but will accept up to 3000watts output into it's input. Just read it in the Manual !!!

I don't know if anyone else saw the report from NAMM, but Kemper made their own little DI box and they showed it in the video. They said they did not have plans to sell it, but they might. I will say it again that I think you need to be careful with cheap DI boxes. If they are passive then they really are just a transformer. Its a small version of the transformer in your amp. With these you get what you pay for. I'll give the Behringer a try, its cheap enough to see.

For whats its worth there are few other alternatives, The ProCo DB1 and the Whirlwind Director. Both are advertised to handle speaker level signals. These are passive and not that expensive.

-
What about an old H&K Red Box Pro.
- It's passive
- Select between speaker or line level input (thru out to speaker)
- 18dB damping in speaker mode
- cab simulator bypass
- ground lift
-
Sounds like it does the job!
Cheers,

What's about this one ? Pretty cheap.

Hmmm, the only reviews I could find of it weren't that favourable. Here's another contender, though! -30dB attenuation should do the trick.

This is a very popular DI requested by touring bands it has a good reputation and sounds neutral.
On their site the FAQ page shows how the connections are configured in a picture diagram.
I have never plugged a hot amp output into my 85 as it's not a popular request but it's definitely made for it and has robust power handling.
I have been using mine for dry signal reamping and bass gtr and its easy and clean. Out to a radial x amp btw. There are folks who would say this is the best DI ever made but I'm not one for hype - it just works nicely and I don't have to second guess the results - I will add this note: do not buy a low budget DI box if you want "Kemper level" audiophile capture.
Cant wait for 3.0 and the foot controller!
PS : my fav profile this week is amp sim 2 - neck single coil - what's yours?
