Feature request : USB to DAW ?

  • Future firmware for sure not Kemper 2 (never heard of that mythical thing) <img src="http://www.kemper-amps.com/forum/wcf/images/smilies/thumbup.png" alt="" />

I figured there would be things that couldn't be done through an "update". And so a redesigned Kemper would eventually come out. I figured the original Kemper has been out for a while and so a new version should be coming at some point to make hardware upgrades. Is there no plans for a redesign of the Kemper amp? I think the Kemper was first released what 5 years ago or something?

I am sure they are at least thinking about it :) Maybe. I know I would be :)

No the first units were available end 2011 beginning 2012. There hasn't been any hint for a Kemper 2 nor any need for it.

I for one hope they don't make a kemper 2 for a long long time , it makes everyone scramble to get the newer one and BAM! all the sudden the kemper 1 isn't good enough anymore . Like people will say Kemper 1 is the best until kemper 2 comes along then all of the sudden , the newer one is better more accurate etc , just like what happened to axe fx 1 when 2 came out . Look at line 6 , the pod was great and was the best until bam! pod 2 then pod xt , and now pod hd , each generation sounded different , different models ETC. , and you couldn't import any of your patches you saved from one to the next! same with axe people had to throw away their presets and start over after all that work !! when axe 2 came out

If the kemper did that all of the profiles we have wouldn't be compatible with the newer unit , and you would have to start from scratch !!!

All of the sudden with these companies the one before isn't as accurate as they claimed . maybe kemper got it right the first time , so they wouldn't have to keep making new hardware

I'm thankful kemper is different than the other modeling guys and doesn't force users to start from scratch; on new hardware that sounds different; all the time

  • This depends on the audio interface. It is USB or FireWire/Thunderbolt nowadays.

So what would be the issue of the "USB audio is not suitable for a professional device" with regards to a built in interface if you end up using USB anyways to connect an external interface to the computer?

The Kemper statement mentioned before was not meant to be read as 'USB audio is not professional' because nowadays professional audio interfaces use it very often as I said but more that in Kemper's opinion it doesn't belong in a professional device like the profiler which has its main focus on profiling and playing profiles.
CK has stated that he doesn't intend to step into this territory.

  • It's not like flipping a switch and suddenly the KPA have USB-audio interface, and CK is only withholding it to be mean.

Adding something like that is probably 6 to 12 month (just guessing, could be more) of assigning development resources that perhaps could be used for other features that are more inline with Kemper future roadmap for the KPA.

Basically adding <feature X> equals removing/postponing something else... Product development is a series of tough decisions.

I think (and hope) that this is the reason.
For me, integrated USB Interface would be great, but its not on first place of my wishlist. So its fine for me if they keep their priorities on other things. But all the other "reasons" not to integrate this feature are not valid / understandable for me.

  • Here's what Eng. Kemper wrote on the forum [from my wiKPA]:

    Quote

USB audio is not planned, as this would require the KPA to be the sole audio interface for your DAW. Remember: you can only use one audio interface on your DAW without hassle. And we assume that you all own a more appropriate audio interface. That is why we recommend to use S/PDIF in combination with an audio interface.

  • I think in studio world USB is not the professional audio but consumer audio interface.
Professional audio was Fire Wire, SPDIF, ASB/ESU. ADAT, TDM and now is the Ethernet AoE(Audio over Ethernet).
Most of the software allow you to use only one interface at the time - this can be bypassed by virtual audio cables and additional ASIO driver - but you will have additional latency.
Besides - i prefer to have multichannel audio interface to record KPA Dry/guit/wet/ signals and i can listen to my backing tracks in the same time on headphones - and/or studio monitors.

  • That CK quote used to annoy me, but I've made peace with the fact that Kemper isn't focused on capturing the prosumer market. Maybe someday they'll release a compact, consumer-oriented footpedal version with USB audio. In the meantime, the Helix is looking pretty good, although I do wish it were smaller.

    Same here.
"we assume that you all own a more appropriate audio interface"
Many of us also had fx pedals, di-boxes with ground lift, compressors...
But I think most users are glad that these are also included in the kemper.
Why? Because "most" does not mean "all" and because its nice and practical to have everything out of the box.
