Is there that big of a difference if you connect it to a computer via USB or Firewire/Ethernet?
Not if the drivers are properly written and you aren't transferring more than 16 channels of audio to/from the computer. Don't believe the hype. Seriously!

It stil annoys me no end, but I respect CK view.
BUT...
I would be very happy to have USB audio in/out because I use my laptop as a multiFX (multichannel looper + fx) and I'd be happier to do that without involving my audio interface in the process.
Should I feel the need to record my "noodling", I could just connect (analog or spdif) to my main studio PC.
In my opinion the whole point of USB connectivity isn't recording (for wich I agree with CK) but to have a digital send/return (assignable in/to various points of the audio chain would be the proverbial, at least in italian, cherry over the cake).

Blue has a xlr to usb interface called Icicle... well i haven`t tried it yet but it would fit into the kemper bag so maybe it is a cool "on the road " thingy
