Q parameter in the Studio Eq block

  • I've forgotten plenty of times to ask this, so let's do it now that I have it in mind :P
So the two mid bands in the studio eq have the typical Q factor that defines how steep they are...but I never know if they get steeper turning the knob on the right or on the left!
My guess is that going right makes them steeper, but can anyone confirm?
Also: is the gain adaptive with respect to the steepness? That is, the less steep, the larger the range of frequency involved, hence the louder it gets if the gain is not somewhat "distributed" through the area...

  • Higher Q values are narrower/steeper, yes.

There's a bit of math involved, but in general you can think of Q as being the opposite of bandwidth, like how wavelength and frequency are inversely related.

I use this site a lot for bandwidth questions. The formatting is gross, but it's still pretty useful: http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-bandwidth.htm

  • Been absorbing a bunch of knowledge from this place recently. Thanks again to everyone! Here's a quick chart that shows how non-linear the relationship between Q, frequency, and bandwidth is as folks here have been explaining.

A Q setting of 0.2 at 100 hertz creates the same "bell" bandwidth as a Q setting of 5.0 at 2500 hertz. (hmmm, picture was uploaded to imgur and then I pasted the link - what's wrong?)
