Rig Manager to re-scan the Rig Exchange

  • It would be handy to have a function that forces RM to rescan RE w/o having to close and restart it. My RM stays on for days when I work on my projects.
I don't think it's currently possible, I've investigated this to no avail.

Would anyone else like this feature?

  • Ha! Good point.

In theory I would use it, but practically I am not hunting for new profiles these days anyway.
However I guess it would be no biggie for you guys to put that function in the context menu of the RE folder.

  • how's that: save some energy so you kids can profile in the future as well ...

    LOL

Are you really convinced that the energy waste by the single individual is relevant on a planetary scale? Actually it is not. I won't take this burden, thanks :D

On a more serious note, I certainly don't keep my PC on because of RM... But when I don't use it the system sleeps, monitor switches off and the disks stop... the overall energy consumption is very low, as you might know.

OTOH, I can't but remember that when I proposed a sleeping mode for the Profiler('s lights) I got no success... apparently no-one @ Kemper thought this would help their kids to have a better future :D

    Peace! :)

  • Oooooh, BURN!!! :-D

  • I'd like a rescan button. In fact, I'd assumed all along that there was a menu option for this.

If there isn't one for the "My Profiler" folder or whatever it's called, that could be handy too as a troubleshooting aid if nothing else.

    I vote for:

Menu item with sub-menu options for "Local" and "Exchange" rescanning.

  • I'd like a rescan button.

In this case please like the OP MM ;)

    think global, act local

We are definitely going off-topic here, but this deserves some consideration IMO (my god, I'm hijacking my own thread...LOL)

What you write makes certainly sense, but there's not one way of thinking or acting only. It's always a matter of priorities. In our individual lifestyle we make choices.
I could use public transportation but chose to own a car. This way I can be late at night and comfortably take my gear back home at 3 am, or can shop and not have to drag bags and water up the hill where I live.
I wear synthetic winter jackets and shoes\boots in winter because they are warm and make me feel better.
I play electric guitar rather than acoustic, this implies consuming electricity. I own more than one electric guitar, while could be using only one and save wood. I use further electric devices for my music, including the Profiler.
I shop at the supermarket, supporting a system responsible for a very high percentage of resources waste.
We all have some luxuries we don't want to do without (anyone smoking here?).
Do you really believe it would be critical to save the 5-watt consumption of my PC when it sleeps? A single intensive breeding farm produces by far much more pollution and resource waste in one month than I'll be able to save or avoid in my life as an individual. (Uh, once a week I eat meat, too.)
Uh,and I wear jeans, at times. Do you have any idea about how polluting is to produce a pair of stone washed ones?

From a social\political POV, the pressure the individual is subjected to in terms of environment awareness and "duties" is clearly of psychological nature. We need to feel guilty. But, a single oil drilling at the North pole kills or poisons more living beings (and rarer) than I'll probably ever eat in my life... A big factory outputs much more subtle powders and smoke in one day than my car in its life cycle... but they bill me if my smokes are not extra-clean. Does this make sense? We definitely need a perspective. Think of how many factories and intensive breeding farms do exist in Europe and US only... and oil drills.
The world is a big machine that crunches resources and makes money go around. Nobody really cares about consequences, unless the money flow stops or reduces for some reasons. Thousands of individuals die every day for direct or indirect consequences of lacking of care, irresponsible techniques and procedures, and forward thinking... And switching my PC off instead of having it sleep would be a way to take care of my kids?! Jesus...
    Let's not get fooled guys.

Let's be aware that they are having us all play the fool at times :/

  • In this case please like the OP MM ;)

    Done.

Sorry Gianfranco. I've learned how to click the "Like" button, but I came to this thing without any contextual awareness, of which I still have little. Is it FaceBook-related? Twitter?

I don't do socialist media, so, as I suggested, I haven't a clue about this stuff. All I know is, if I really like a post, I "Like" it... sometimes.

You could say that you were pointing at the moon and I was looking at your finger. :D

  • Gianfranco, sadly I fully agree. But there's always room for improvements and it's not because your impacts are infinitely small that you can't make it better. No judgement here, but it's good to keep a goal/hope behind your acts, at least for yourself. Sorry for OP disturbance (not more than you did). Your suggested enhancement looks nice

my comment (... which took the thread OT initially ...) was intended to be rather funny than serious. it was an attempt to tell you that there might be a simple workaround. and no, switching off your PC will not result in a difference for our environment and I will not go down the road of telling you my thoughts on symbolic actions now.
in my personal, humble, opinion, nobody really needs a function which does the same like closing and opening an application. at least not in this context. if there would be new Rigs every couple of minutes you would have a point but with an average of maybe 3 Rigs per day?
I didn't know about your feature request regarding the LEDs, in fact I like the idea. But don't hold your breath.

No, it's just a way to attract Kemper crew's attention. They wrote in the past that they prefer this to a number of "+1" posts in the thread (and I agree).
So think of it as a "+1" :)

I somehow agree with you. As a matter of fact, tho, you don't know anything about my goals, hopes or ways to improve the world. Don't assume that requesting a "rescan" command can anyway represent my inner universe... I might be a better person than that after all ;)

    Hey, no worries!
Peace to you too bro :)

Hey G String, no problem at all! You are definitely entitled to any even-not-humble opinions, but please consider that you are the board's moderator, so what you write here has a different weight than any other's and is anyway read differently.
My situation is that I keep RM open for weeks, and if I hadn't to rescan RE I'd keep it on all the time. As I wrote, I also keep a number of windows open showing specific folders, so that restoring the current scenario every time it's not just a matter of a couple of clicks.

Anyway, I'd just notice that already 5 people stated this suggestion makes sense to them, so it's not out of this world after all.
    Peace to you too :)

I didn't know about your feature request regarding the LEDs, in fact I like the idea. But don't hold your breath.

Again, no problem. I am not the "whining" kind of user. This forum is designed to gather requests and suggestion, and I am just employing my rights as a user. This has never meant to me to expect that my vision would be shared or that a professional crew would use several hours of their time in order to fulfil my wishes :)

Since we are at that, a sleeping mode would be perfect for an all-solid-state device like the Profiler IMO. Turning that knob, apart from consuming more energy for the peak voltages (sorry, I don't know the correct expression for this, hope you get it), causes a mechanical stress every time. When I work on a project I often use the Profiler in the same room for one week... I could avoid turning that chickenhead 4-6 times per day :)

On a side note, in the thread I opened for that request in its own time, someone posted that they like to keep the Profiler on when they leave the room just for the pleasure of watching the lights in the dark... Now this would be environmental consciousness! ;D

that's why I emphasized on this being my opinion
