Studio Status - 2016

  • Good to know, thank you.

If Reaper coded for ARA so that Melodyne would work perfectly, that DAW would be 100% for me.
As it is, I'm using the LPX skin. I WANT to like LPX, but I haven't gotten over any hump yet.

Did you use a tutorial that made LPX gel for you?

No, I just worked LPX since switching to Mac OS in 2009. The most important thing for me was to learn the key commands to move comfortably inside the project.

  • GUITARS:

We talk so much I didn't think to include this, but for completeness, why not?

I am new so sorry if this has been discussed to death already (and don't mean to hijack db's thread), but what guitars are you guys finding work best with the Kemper?

Personally, I am liking single coils (Tele's specifically) since the additional clarity really allows me to hear subtle differences between profiles. Humbucker's are fine, and yes I know about "input sens" but they just don't seem to be as versatile across the board from clean to higher gain. Nice to have different colors to paint with, but if I could only have one guitar with my Kempoer, it would be a tele.

Any guitar will work with the Kemper, just as well as they would work with an amp. I think humbuckers are more than just fine. So are single coils. What really matters is the profile you put the guitar through, some will work for some guitars and other profiles will work for other guitars. But there's no reason to just stick to a tele, you might be wowed by the different sounds you can coax out of other guitars. Of course, teles may work well for you and your music, so that's a personal choice.

  • eskimoke,
It could be that you like a brighter tone and the Tele is a very bright guitar. Humbuckers lose some of that treble by design. So if you did want to tame a Humbucker, look to upping the treble and taming the bass, maybe scoop the mids?

My experience is that: KPA = Real World Amps
So the guitars I have today, that I played in tube amps before the KPA, sound good and bad with the same types of amps on similar (well profiled) profiles.

Before, my Tele worked with every amp, and it still does with every profile.
My Strat loved Fender amps but without pedals didn't really like some Marshall amps compared to humbucking guitars.

My Axis Sport with MM90's sounds very similar to a Beatles Epiphone Casino, and sound good on most all profiles.
So look into getting a good guitar with P90s. The Casino, the SG or LP, etc I'm sure are similar to that Tele in versatility.

In summary, I don't think there is a limitation in the Kemper that loves SC vs Humbuckers.

The way to think about guitars are that they are 1/2 of a pair. And the amp is the other half. And some don't get along as well as others. And the Kemper holds true to such relationships between Guitar<-->Amp in my experience.

  • Yes, I do agree that the Kemper does react in generally the same way as a traditional guitar > amp setup.

I think what is happening is that I now have hundreds of profiles, but have gotten lazy so it seems like a lot of work to have to switch guitars, lol. For me, single coils work MOST of the time and buckers work SOME of the time, but I guess I need to spend more time in more situations - thanks for the feedback (no pun intended).

Remember this > Line 6 Variax? As much as I love the smell of hot tubes and soldering up new pickups, one has to wonder how far off a convincing version of this technology can be....

  • I've created folders specific to my guitars in Rig Manager and there I put profiles that I think are really favorable to each guitar. It's a work in progress. As I find a good one, I put it there.

You could, at some point, just rename them with a preface that has the guitar mnemonic so it's easy to sort if you want to put them on your Kemper for independent (away from the Rig Manager) use.

  • I believe that was put there so profilers could tag what their guitar pickup type was when they first made the profile.

There have been arguments about it both ways, but I don't hear from my profiling that the type of guitar pickup makes much of a noticeable difference (that is, same amp and setting but refining with different guitar pickups)
