I'm trying to make the sustain a LOT shorter on a bass guitar sound.
I've used the KPA comp with a longish attack and a lot of squish but it's actually making the sustain longer.
It doesn't seem to work like a standard compressor. Any tips please?

try the Gate stomps, they are downward expanders
or a small piece of foam near the bridgehth
-
Thanks Don, the gate did the damping trick.
Still cant get what I want though which is a clearer less woolly bass.
Dunno if it's the bass itself (Fender Jaguar)
It's so woolly I could knit a jumper with it. -
PS, I seem to have tried all kinds off bass profiles and pre amps I'm seriously wondering if it is the bass itself, bought it brand new though.

Hmm.... Fresh, round wound strings? Are the tone controls turned up all the way? Does it have P/J pickups? Have you tried using just the J?
-
depending on the model, these basses can have quite a few controls.
Precision pickups do have a kinda woolly sound, that's their nature.
like @paults said, maybe the Jazz pickup sound is more your thing.
on my G&L SB-2 I like the J pickup up all the way, and the P pickup mixed in to fit what I'm after.try a Studio EQ post STACK. high Q (small bandwidth), maximum boost, sweep the frequency until you hit the 'woolly' frequency (probably low-mids), then cut and adjust Q to taste.
-
@Paul new strings -no (roundwound) tones both turned up and all combinations in between inc each on their own.
@don yep, I've been equing the hell out of it on the KPA. It's a bit of a pain not being able to play some loops (I have no remote) to do it.
It's tiresome having to cut or boost an eq, then play a bit then cut or boost ad nauseaum unless I'm missing a trick?

AT 1.44 is the sort of sound I'm after (I don't have the active though)
-
have you tried the Bass Rig Pack, especially the Profiles of the "Bass Diver"?
-
I have been through the Bass rigs and thought them a bit ordinary.
I ended up opting for EBSmicrobass 2 preamp, bit of comp and eq has done the trick.
Thanks for the help guys.

that's a pretty standard P/J sound with round wounds. I 've a feeling it's your technique not the amp that's the issue here. You should be able to get that sound from a standard DI profile and a little eq/Compression to taste.

Thanks for the assumption
