Hi everyone,
Are you using the Input noise gate at all on your Kemper? If so, what value do you set it to?
I find I have to set it up quite high on some profiles (around 4.0) to get rid of noise, but that does not play well when I turn down my guitar volume knob.
Another issue I have when I use noise gate is that, contrary to what the basic manual says, a bit of noise comes back when I hit the strings.
I'm not a hi-gain guy, more clean or clean + Tube Screamer in front.
noise gate (Input section) tips anyone?

Hey, I find that the noise gate does not close as fast as some pedals do, so I set it a little higher. But I do find that it is transparent and does not kill much of your sustain. Don't be afraid to experiment with it, as well as a stomp noise gate to achieve the kind of response you are looking for. -
the INPUT noise gate is kind of a 'signal conditioner', cleaning up noise and other artifacts.
as a standard downward expander noise gate, please use one of the Noise Gate Stomps, either the 2:1 or the 4:1.hth
-
I use a combination of both
There are also many good profiles without " noise and artefacts" Therefore i only use the gates like Don has written. It depends on the amp and your taste imho. -

noise and artifacts are produced by fluorescent lights or other ambient noises picked up, especially by single coils. they are NOT issues of a certain Profile

@DonPetersen i must say..since a few firmware updates i have feedback issues.
Global Noisegate 4-5 and Stompgate 4:1 at 3 always worked fine for me at rehearsals + live on Stage even with Profiles with Gain 8.
But since a few months i always get feedback after palm mutes with 4:1 Gate at 4 and Profiles with Gain 6,5-7...very strange
EMG guitar like before...Clean Sense -6 -

Are you sure?
My experience is that i have hughe differences with noise when i load different profiles one after another. Ihave f.e. profiles from a diezel ( high gain) from sinmix and the is no noise or artefacts and when i load another diezel with the same amount of gain from another seller there is noise. So i thougt its a matter of the profile, because i didnt change lights or have a mobile on side of the kpa or start another screen or computer. Up to this time i thought its a matter of the profiling prozess. -
some amps produce more noise some less and if profiled with a pedal in front there will be more noise.
I often read "noisefree clean profiles" makes me laugh personally. Has nothing to do with quality profiling -

i think it has to do with multiple things...also the stuff Don mentiones
-
unplug the guitar cable from the Profiler, not on the guitar side obviously
everything that goes away is coming from the pickups.
distortion/extremely high amplification also raises the noise floor, this is to be expected.
in my experience the Profiler is quieter than a tube amp with a similar amount of gain.
the CABINET will also influence how you perceive such noise. -
I turn the input noise gate off completely. I use the guitar volume knob a lot to get my tone (and volume) & I find a noise gate just gets in the way.

I got to the same conclusion a few weeks ago in the studio.
I wanted to use the "TAF-ManRock 800" profile, however it was quite noisy. Even with the noise gate at 5 or something, it left this "trail of noise", due to the gate not closing fast enough. It almost sounded like a reverb.
I switched to a JVM profile from TillS with similar amount of gain and the noise was gone.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I ended up comparing the Input Noise gate and the 2:1 stomp. I went with 2:1 stomp at 1.8 value. Works really well with my rig and setup. Cleans up nicely the buzz/noise and still very useable when I turn down the guitar volume knob, and very importantly retains the dynamic even when I play soft with the pick.
Glorious little box this Kemper! -

Glorious little box this Kemper! That's it, or at least how I do it. I keep the global gate off and only use it when no combination of lifts on the back will kill venue noise (i.e. rarely.) 2:1 stomp on high(er) gain stuff as needed.

I run the global gate at 2.0. I put the 2:1 in the #4 slot in the stomp section if needed. It defaults at 2.9.
I start at 0 and slowly roll up to just enough to hush that puppy up. I rarely make it all the way to 2.9.
My attack dynamics feel natural.
