New Kemper to FoH - Risky?

  • Manic mad day with a 5am start, 20 mins just now with my new Kemper and back out.

I restored my rigs - great. Through my DXR10 there is an effect I can hear, almost like a slap back - mostly with the higher gain rigs. I've turned off reverb, delay, space - selected constant latency - still there.

I don't recall this in the past. Any ideas of things to check?

    Thanks,
    Andy

  • Are saying you run from the Kemper main out into a DI box and then to the board? Or, are you saying the main out is the same as a DI signal? I ask because the only time I have ever seen a DI box used is when an instrument is being plugged directly into the board. A bass guitar, for instance.

no. because the mains ARE symmetrical already. in this case you don't need a DI box at all. and yes, you can run them directly into a mixer (if that's what you mean with "board").

  • Hi. Did you say -12? In my experiance dealing with guitar players at line check, especially if there are a few bands on ....normally gives me a little headroom on the desk as hitting -18 doesn't allow for the magical turning up during the set that normally happens as well as played much louder presets that weren't played during soundcheck.....

The other guitarist in my band has an amp that magically gets louder throughout the set!

  • Can't remember my settings but I think it is around -18 and never had any complaints from sound engineers, always told me I had a good signal...I will check it but it was a recommendation from someone on here. I've never touched it since.

Anyho, as a guitarist I was always guilty of creeping volume because your ears dull so you turn up BUT not anymore...because I leave my FOH setting as they are unlinked, so i'd need to go into the system menu to change - not something I do mid gig or need becuase it would make little difference to my on stage volume so the FOH stays consistanet with the sound engineer in control.

As my back line is now generally pointing at me, even if I increase my on stage, its less likely to affect the front line....so to me the Kemper seems to be a sound engineers friend too :)

  • Actually meant the other way round. -18 is generally unity on a analog desk so to speak ( in practical terms ). -12 is hotter if I'm not mistaken going up the scale. If you're running a bunch of presets quiet from the volume on the kemper - or not maxed out I guess -12 would allow for that.... I'm guessing you should be pretty hot with all your presets for the best signal-to-noise ratio (no specialist here) on the bottom volume knob and around the levels listed above for the master. As far as the preset volume knob goes im not sure where the best signal-to-noise ratio is on the bottom volume knob without further investigation?

I know personally with the distorted guitar I don't like it anywhere near unity to begin with for various reasons. Very loudest preset with very loudest guitar solo is what I ask for from the guitarist at soundcheck (that annoys people and is frowned upon by some engineers for some snooty cultural reason). I mix from experience not from a strategically technical point of view but I know running guitars at full tilt on a very big PA at soundcheck can be a scary moment if you don't know the desk that well and there are a lot of important people around so I tend to mix in the guitars after everything else just to be on the safe side so I know where they are rather than get exploded by the wrong button push ( that never happens to me of course ).

I have a bunch of tips for users though if anyone's interested from an average engineer's point of you. Don't want to intrude on the OP of course!

  • Call me an idiot fourstrk but how to navigate to MISC or are your referring to ' just another thread'... no don't.....

EDIT. As you would know other forums do sometimes have a thread group called MISC. or was I just told to go buy some elbow grease!! ;(

  • Probably been mentioned before, but clashes like you're experiencing with the other guitarist are (IMO) usually caused by:

    1) Poor song part arrangements
    2) Band members that prioritise their part above the whole band's sound
    3) Mono mix or poorly crafted stereo image
    4) Everything else...
