vocals are often subject to quite a bit of compression, this will further enhance the room reverb.

no budget tip:
mic screens mostly dampen the reflections from behind the mic, so what you re picking up might becoming from behind you.
If you have a sufficiently large enough bookshelf, you could position yourself before it (with some distance, tho) and arrange the books to mimic a diffusor.

It's not the worst I've heard, but in a mix I'd be expecting to use a couple of compressors, to give overall roughly 12 dB of compression (give or take) on the track and at these levels, you can hear the room with the vocal in isolation. Again, it's not the worst I've heard, especially as it's a home recording, but I'd do more to try to cut it down further. If you've got a couple of spare mic stands, try rigging up a duvet (or two!) a foot or so from a wall and stand with your back to it. That'll take the worst of the high frequency reflections from behind you and should help, in conjunction with the mic screen filtering the reflections from in front of you. A nice shaggy carpet and a cloud above you would take most of the rest.

True, but in the file djemass linked to, it's mostly flutter echo that's audible.

Try a dynamic microphone like the Shure SM7B. Great vocal microphone with way less sensitivity to "room acoustics". Large Diaphragm Condernsers pickup pretty much everything around you, way more than you notice with your ears. LDCs make you discover sounds and noises you haven't ever noticed exist in your room (and outside).

Btw, there's a nice little trick for getting rid of small amounts of room reverb, if all else fails.

You have to be a bit careful, as sometimes you can lose low end and level, but it's useful, if you're in a fix

The AKG D5 certainly is a nice and cost effective stage mic.
The Shure SM7B is a (very famous) studio mic and plays in a whole different league

If you have a closet full of clothes, that's also a very efficient deadener

The example I posted was done with the lowly old Waves C1 compressor and took less than two minutes, but really any compressor with a fast attack will do.

You could try the SPL De-Verb (from Plugin Alliance) plugin, Gerald.

Should be cheap-and-effective.
