Audio pops while recording using spdif

One of the main reasons I went for Kemper is due to how easy it is to record at home with and on the whole connecting it and setting it up has been a breeze.

I am now having some issues though when recording with the Kemper and my audio interface. I am not an expert when it comes to recording but I am keen to learn.

When tracking I often hear "pops" in the audio which are also there when I am playing the tracks back.

I am using SPDIF from the Kemper into a Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP and using GarageBand as my daw. I've made sure that most of my background programs are shut down. My Mac has 16GB Ram and a 2.7 GHz processor.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Is your interface set to be the clock slave? If it is not you will get clicks and pops due to sync errors.

Buffer size will influence CPU performance as well, too low can overtax the system and result in popping.

i am not familiar with the interface you are using but it should be a parameter in the control panel that you use to setup the routing for your interface.

It's the sync source in Mix Control. Switch that to external/spdif.

Just so I understand the switch, does this mean that the kemper/focusrite/daw are now in sync with the clock on the kemper or the audio interface?

If it is in sync with the kemper, does this mean I also need to have the kemper fired up in order to get any output?

Your interface is now synced with the kemper clock. You can, however turn off the kemper just like before.

I was running into a similar issue with my Kemper -> Scarlett 6i6 SPDIF connection. Was getting a faint popping every 8 to 10 seconds. I discovered was running an older version of the Focusrite control software. I installed the latest setting and it corrected the issue. Perhaps worth a try.
