Orange DIVO

  • Has anyone heard of this? Tried it? Sounds like a great idea. According to what I've read about it, it works with tube amps that have a fixed bias. I found this on another forum from Carvin,

"The typical tube amp is a fixed bias amplifier. These may have an adjustment pot or a fixed resistor for the bias voltage setting, but either way they are called a fixed bias amplifier when there is no cathode resistor on the output tubes. The bias current is set purely by the input bias voltage."

Im confused, does this mean the Divo will work with any tube amp? If so why does Orange emphasize "Fixed Bias" in the owners manual.

  • There are cathode biased amplifiers and fixed bias amplifiers. Amps like the Fender Champ, Tweed Deluxe, Vox AC 30 are cathode biased, which don’t require bias adjustment.
Then you get fixed bias amps like most Marshall’s,Peavey, Mesa Boogie etc. where there is either a resistor with a fixed value; or a variable resistor (potentiometer) with an operating range that must be set when replacing tubes.
This Orange Divo is saying it works with either fixed resistor or bias adjustable amps. The old school and /or inspired (like Matchless now adays) that use a Cathode bias don’t work with it.
