Jeff made great music while he lived.

So good...
Cheers.
-
Dude was phenomenal!
Saw him live once and I'm so grateful I did.
-
I love how at the end the bass player walks over and he's like "How the f*** is he doing that?"
-
Dayum... brings back memories
-
WTF was that!! 4:11
Whoa...
Ash

Jeff was great. Saw him live in his own blues bar in Toronto, he was playing in a jazz band. He used to play guitar on one song only to switch to trumpet for the next song.. a very talented musician. such a loss...
-
Saw him in Glasgow once too. What a player!
I'll never forget the first time me an my mate heard him on the video jukebox in the The Hunting Lodge Kilmarnock. The played the Confidence Man video. Our heads literally spun round with the guitar sound. THEN we saw HOW he was doing it and out jaws hit the deck

Another Canadian legend! I always loved this song!
Little did I know it was written by John Hiatt! Makes sense now, but never knew that!?

Just got a chance to watch it properly. "the bass player"????? WTF. The fekkin' bass player is Marcus Miller!!!!!! With Omar Hakim on drums and Dr John on keys. Damn, now THAT is a RHYTHM SECTION
-
Funny, when I was younger I passed on a set of Red Evans Strat pups that were made for Jeff! So lame that I was broke and on welfare lmao! I shoulda sold some stuff to get those badboys but they were like $350 bucks, which back then is like $750 or whatevs, now! Rod still does work on various amps in town here but stopped making those pups eons ago! Maybe I should look him up and see if he has any of Jeff's gear!

IMHO Marcus and Omar are the real deal, but honestly, I've never understood the hype behind Dr. John, Alan. I've never heard anything special or what I'd call imaginative from him. Maybe I'm a tough room, but I pride myself on being able to discern ass from class, even if my own playing has always been classic ass.
Full disclosure:
Been a bit of a fan of Marcus since he played for Miles at age 17 back in the late '80s.
-
..... and that was Dave Sanbourn intoducing him - if I'm not mistaken .... He's class for sure .....
His band around that time included Marcus, the late Don Grolnick on keys and Steve Gadd
-
Indeed, that's him, lento!
Marcus' intro, playing slap bass, on Dave's track "Straight to the Heart", was for many years my favourite, "uplifting" bass section / passage / solo. Fantastic sound and attitude. So good in fact, that the rest of the song's a bit of a let-down, especially if you're a bass player.

yes I love the Marcus era Miles. I know jazz fans don’t really rate it but Tutu was a fabulous album in my opinion.
Haven’t seen Maris live unfortunately but saw Omar with Sting on the Dream of the Blue Turtles tour. Brilliant drummer.
I do really like Dr John. There was obviously a period where he was totally out his face on smack but the early stuff and more recent stuff has been great. Did you know he started out on guitar bith on his solo stuff and as a sideman?
FWIW Ikm sure your own playing is far from calssic ass.

They should rate it; Tutu was brilliant IMHO. Worth listening to for the vibe alone, which is unique... a dimensional trip for sure.

Didn't know Dr. John started out on guitar. Interesting.

I'm living proof that you can have impeccable taste and discernment and not a shred of playing skill; it's all in my head, man. Seriously.
I'll be relying on technology - the ability to record in bursts and stitch things together. With any luck I'll be able to give the impression that I know what I'm doing.

Dr. John was a great guitarist until he got shot in the hand. "Then I switched to the Pianskee".
