Does anyone know what amp was used to record sad but true? I know Marshall jcm800 and mesa mark iv were all over the album. But that song in particular doesn't sound like either one to me. Am I way off?
Black album amps. (Sad but true)

I think Hetfield was still using a scooped mark 2c but I'm pretty sure there's a ton of outboard eq'ing going on there as well. I remember gettin pretty close with a dc-10 but its been 25 years or so. Its probably a mark 2c and a Marshall for the mids.

C+ and a ADA-MP1

It just has that perfect blend of sponge and thack. I feel like most amps are leaning towards one a bit much. Hmmmm

It’s not just one amp. Multiple amps, and multiple cabs, all blended together.
If you watch «a year and a half in the life of Metallica» part one, you can also see them build a «tent of doom» to overdub the E (D) chugs, using a baritone guitar. ?

I have that video and watched it haha. I've seen mesas, Marshal's. VHTs and that's it. Maybe I should try a VHT? I'm not sure what model was in the movie.
