[LRS] Tips and Tricks - Tonal Balance and ParaEQ with High/Low Pass Filters

Hi All,

We all have different experiences and expectations with tone, from darker to brighter to smooth or even harsh. All of these terms are relative to ones expectation. The exact same tone can be given a completely different descriptor based on the person.

It's easy enough to grab a profile that fits our needs at the time but as our ears and experience grow so will the curiosity.

A simple thing to do to reduce some low end or shave off some of the undesirable high end would be to add a parametric EQ after the amp, I use X slot, and adjust the high and low pass filters. You can lock this setting but in my experience it will require different fine tuning with different profiles.

A good starting point would be to set the low cut to about 100 and the high cut to around 8k and move a little each way from there to fine tune.

This can really make a or break a profile for some, it can even help balance the mix when playing with a backing track. Give it a try!

Hi Deadpan,

This is exactly what I do, even the same frequencies ! According to the cab, I even play slightly with cab high shift if necessary.

If I understood well deadpan djemass

When I try a profile which I really like but something is missing im ther low end or too much highend fisrt thing to do is parametric EQ in X slot?

I used to dial definition and after that the hardware eq knobs.

I like to try the tone stack on the front of the Kemper first.

The high and low cuts are only to remove the upper most and lower most frequencies.

Definition is a great parameter also but for me it has an over all effect.

Yes you can save it as an EQ preset. And as mentioned you can lock it in place.

You just have to remember when locked it will effect ALL profiles.

I do this too. And I have , in addition, tke same preset with a notch around 5,5 KHz to reduce this "famous" fizz which many of us speak.

I use two PEQs. The studio EQ in slot X and then an outboard unit in front of the amp. The one in front is used to tame any resonant spikes from any particular guitar (my LP has a pretty loud woof right around 200 Hz) and then X is used to tame any issues with a rig's profile. I stole the method I use to tune them from this place.

Max the gain with the highest Q possible and then very slowly sweep to pinpoint any low or high peak issues. This can take a bit of back and forth to really dial it in. Then scoop as needed.
