Tone request: Since I've Been Loving You, Led Zeppelin

  • Hi,

I'll try and ask this one a little differently...

How can I get sustain on a clean tone. Check out this clip from, Ayla. That sustain goes on for like, eva ;)

  • If you make it old school style, go for a Marshall Plexi profile, and play the clean part with low guitar volume on the neck pickup, and go full with the bridge pickup for overdrive sound.

There are tons of Plexi profiles, both free and comercial.

Aye, I'm doing that. My tone sounds good, but to get the clean tone, the volume on the neck (LP) is tuned down to about 6 or 7. Tone Slightly rolled off too. Problem is, it kills the sustain. I'm struggling to find a balance between clean neck + sustain, distorted bridge.

  • In the video, she is using a Delay, and perhaps some Reverb, to add sustain at the end of the riffs. It sounds to me like Ducking is used with the effects, so they are not loud when short notes are played, but, can be heard as long notes start to decay.

One trick with a Les Paul for clean/lead is to use the middle pickup position, and turn the neck volume down almost all the way (less than 1 on the dial) to lessen the output of the guitar without darkening the tone. Then, use the switch to solo on the bridge pickup.
