Guitar cab - traditional guitar speaker players

  • Hi All,

Spending my first few days with the Kemper using direct amp and studio (cab off) profiles into a 2 x 12 with Greenbacks loaded. Have not even gotten into swapping out speakers (have a ton) yet getting good results.

Just looking for some tips - tweaks (some may be hidden to a newb user) that can enhance the experience even more. Again happy at this time but curious what some of you players do?

  • This is not to improve your current setup but to let you know for future use.

If you ever gig with that setup, using a real guitar cab, you can still send a complete rig sound (with cabinet) to FOH without having to use a mic. To do that you have to go to Output and in the first page you select Monitor Cab off. That way you don't have to worry to turn the Cabinet module when you use a real guitar cab connected to the powered Kemper or using the Monitor Outputs. The sound you get in your guitar cab has no Cabinet in it, but the sound coming out of the Main Outputs to FOH does have the Cabinet in it.

Also in the Output menu, you have a complete EQ section for both those outputs if you need to tweak any of them to suit the conditions in the room, without affecting the sound in the other output or having to tweak all your rigs.

And also, any of the output volumes can be linked or not to the Master Volume pot. This is useful for example if you are tweaking the output of the Main Outs, but then once the sound guy says it's ok you can unlink the Main Outputs to the Master Volume, but still keep your Monitor Out linked, so you can use that Master Volume to set your own volume in your cab or monitors, without affecting the FOH output.

    Hope all this is useful.

  • Appreciate the wisdom! Main use is generally at home jamming (should have mentioned it) but every once in a while will hang out with some friends playing so this could be useful.

  • Well not so sure about hanging out with friends or even leaving the dwelling. Brought in a 2 x 12 with some Jensens inside plugging a Strat into the Kemper. Bouncing around the rig manager testing some profiles. Pretty darn magical...I may never leave the playing room let alone the house :S

That sounds like a great combination. Do keep in mind though that when using the Kemper with a regular guitar speaker, the speaker colours the tone to an enormous degree.

So what might happen is that you have a great sound through your cab. But when you send a signal to the FOH, it may not be even close. I mean, it may still be good, but it won't be the tone you are hearing through your cab.

So always do your tweaks for the stage through studio monitors or a PA system. Take your cab along so you can make appropriate EQ tweaks to get the sound you want.

And also, play at the volume you are likely to be playing at. Fletcher Munson effect can really mess things up if you aren't prepared.
