4ohm or 16ohm better for Powerhead?

  • I'm planning to try a 2x12 cab with my Kemper Powerhead. My existing WGS 25w Green Beret and 50w Invader speakers are both 8ohm so my wiring choices for the cab are 16ohm or 4ohm.

Is it better to run at 16ohm and only having half the power or 4 ohm with potentially too much power too quick? I appreciate 8ohm is the ideal but I haven't got that option without an additional investment.

  • Definitely 4 ohm. The manual has been updated and now recommends 4 - 16 ohm.

8 ohm will allow full power, 16 only half power. 4 ohm would theoretically allow double, but there is a momentary cut out feature in the Kemper if 600 watts is exceeded.

Kemper had the choice, and made their own Kabinet 4 ohm.

This is all moot though, I think your ears will start bleeding before you exceed the volume capabilities of your speakers or amp, I'd recommend to keep power amp boost at zero though.
