External pedal noise

  • So I FINALLY got my hands on a maxon af-9 pedal!

This is my only external pedal and actually the only standalone pedal that I've had in decades.

I'm running it between the guitar and the kemper, and when on it sounds glorious. But when it's off theres an ungodly white noise.

It is a true bypass pedal, the specs are at the bottom of this page:

If I crank the noisegate (first stomp position) to the max I can get it to go away, but who wants to have to do that!

The noise happens with both battery and the official maxon power adapter.

    Thoughts on how to resolve?

  • I would check first the cables (each one at the time, specially the one between the maxon and the Kemper), then the isolation of the jack plugs in the maxon (they could ground loop on the enclosure).

If something is too complicated, then you need to learn it better

  • Thanks for the tips!

I troubleshooted per you instructions and everything looked fine.

...then I discovered that the issue only occurs when the volume pot on the guitar is set around half way! At zero or max the pedal is quiet, but as you taper towards the middle, the noise merges. Tried it on two different guitars and the reaction was identical.

    Is this common?
