I'd like to keep using the S/PDIF to hook up my KPA to the interface, and I'm in search of a new interface.
I wonder if anyone owns the SSL 2+ and can let me know if any of the the 4 S/PDIF connections that come with this interface can be used as input. Or if that's unworkable and there's no other way to connect my KPA to this interface than through TRS 1/4 or XLR.
Otherwise I am happy to listen to recommendations of interfaces with which I can keep using the S/PDIF connection, as I do currently with my Focusrite Saffire PRO 24 DSP. Or else feel free to tell me it's not that crucial to get an S/PDIF connection, if that's going to limit my choice of an interface so much. My budget is 500€ tops-

The Focusrite Saffire PRO 24 DSP that I use currently does not run with the operating system of my recently purchased Macbook (I think it's Mojave, not sure). My Mac will simply not detect the interface. The Saffire series were discontinued some time ago and they are only compatible up to a certain Mac OS.

Ok then you need something else. This is the worst thing with interfaces. They all discontinue them after a couple of years and eventually you have buy a new and they want us to buy their latest audio interface.

I am running a Saffire Pro 14 on an iMac and had the issue where my iMac wouldn’t recognize the Saffire. However, if you go into the settings you can override this.

I just don't see the way. If it's not detected, there is little I can do to make it detectable afaik.

Those are RCA speaker type connections on the SSL for your Line Outs. Not SPDIF. Get yourself a real SPDIF interface like this...

that audio card looks nice but i want to enter to the UAD world so im thinking to buy the Apollo Twin but the only i dont like from the Apollo Twin it doesnt have SPDIF

I guess the logical question then is whether the SPDIF makes that much of a difference compared to Analog (TRS or XLR) to be worth the hassle.
I don't need that many outputs or inputs as in the Motu you linked.
I had thought of the Motu M4, UA Volt 276 or the SSL 2+, none of which has SPDIF. I would need to go for another Focusrite

I use the Motu M4 and reamp it just using analog. It has the best specs in that class of interfaces. I don't believe there are discernable differences between analog and SPDIF, just more convenience. But my next interface upgrade will be the Motu Mk5.
I am using just TS cables. XLR only for mics.
