Senses - guitars on a decidedly synth based tune

  • I've always listened to a lot of synth based music and it all started with Jean Michel Jarre.

While I'm first and foremost a guitar player, I got my break into the musical instrument industry as a synth programmer as I got really intimate with the Yamaha DX7.

All this time I've been somewhat surprised at how little guitar there's been in the synth music genre. So once in a while I write a tune where I try to stay true to the synth genre and still use guitars.

This is is one such tune.

  • Well done Mats_Nermark I can definitely hear the Jarre in there. I think there was a lot more guitar + synth back then than most people realize because it was all so synth heavy but it was definitely there, just more hidden, think of Duran Duran with Rio, all those Quincy productions, often I didn’t even realize that some of the sounds were natural instruments especially the bass-lines.

  • I'm already aggravated with patch cables. I'd get lost with some of those synths and cables coming out the wazoo. Nice Mats as usual. 8)

Larry Mar @ Lonegun Studios. Neither one famous yet.

  • great 80's moods & tone, well done Mats. What a cool job it must have been to be a synth pro :)

I love the Dx7 from Arturia and all sort of cool synths from this era CS80, juno, jupiter 8 to name a few I really love.

    Thanks Renaud!

Being into synths has really taken me places.

My first break was programming and demoing the DX range of synths for Yamaha.

Then I was a product specialist for the Akai distributor and in that capacity I served as Technical Liaison between Akai and the sponsored guys doing the Michael Jackson BAD Tour. Being on that stage was an experience.

Then I was product specialist at another distributor and was in charge of Zoom and they flew me over to Tokyo to work on a few products.

I've been to the Frankfurt Musik Messe 30 times and to the Winter NAMM Show 20+ times. The best of it all are all the friends I've made in the business.

Yes there were quite a bit of guitar in the songs that were pop oriented and I loved most of it. But if you listen to Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis and the likes of them, there were few (if any) guitar tracks.

    Thanks BT!

Patch cables with modular synths can be fun providing you have a rudimentary knowledge of synthesis and signal flow. Since they aren't programmable, they are a right b*tch to reset if you have to redo something.

  • True, but every once in a while there’s that single note in the right place. It’s very hard to have no “natural” instruments at all and keep it sounding alive.

  • Mats_Nermark This is brilliant, it really takes me back to the 80's and could easily be a theme tune for a hit TV show. Guitar solo's and melodies are so clean and melodic, i wish i had your feel. Brilliant track

    Hi Joe!

Thanks you for the nice comment.

As long as I don't try to sound like you, I guess I come out all right. :D

  • Lol, Mats_Nermark your guitar playing skills are way better than mine

If you say that, you are seriously underestimating your rhythm chops.

With a little fluidity and some scales almost anyone with patience can learn to solo. Solid rhythm takes talent and dedication which I seem to lack.
