I have an unpowered Kemper toaster which is great, but I want to play it like a traditional amp.
I have studio monitors but they're at my desk and I would like a speaker I can use with it.
I was thinking about getting a combo amp with an FX loop and using it with the kemper, specifically a Bugera V22.
What are your thoughts on this?
a tube power amp will color the sound.
The tube power amp signature is already part of the Profile so this will be doubled.
The speaker of the combo will heavily color any sound.
A neutral and powerful enough power amp and a neutral speaker would be a much better fit - like the Kemper Power Kabinet.
I have used so far:
PRS 2 channel Custom 50 (through the return)
XiTone MBritt powered speaker
Bose L1 MII
Unpowered Kabinet Klone
All of these are great, but the best so far is the Kabinet and Klone. I'm pushing them with a Seymour Duncan PowerStage 700.
If you are set on getting a tube amp then the cleanest one you can find will work okay. No doubt a Powered Kabinet or passive Kabinet with an SS pedal amp will work the best.
A 22w EL84 combo is going to add quite a bit of power amp coloration and the speaker is going to make all profiles sound pretty similar thereby losing one of the biggest advantages of the KPA. The Bugera will also weigh quite a bit more than something like the Power Kabinet or an FRFR monitor.
Personally, I just can’t see any reasons to use the FX return of a valve amp (except as a short term sticking plaster if you already own the valve amp) but some people seem to like the added vale on valve action.
