So this is a $20 72MHz dsp chip. Will it be possible to upgrade?
By comparison line 6 hd uses a Sharc 333Mgz that cost around $30. Would something a little more powerful help the start up speed?
If I'm not completey dumb that is just a communication controller for the ethernet and the USB....The DSP should be mounted on the other fixed tray at the side (underneath). AFAIK it should be a dual core Motorola one....somebody tell me if I'm wrong...

Yes, certainely.
As most systems of this type (like, for those who knew it, the Soundart Chameleon, a great device in its time), the Kemper is clearly an association of a DSP, which takes care of generating the sound that you hear, and nothing else, and a microcontroller (like here the LPC2468 ) which takes care of managing the user interface (leds, buttons and knobs), the kipr files, and some of the I/O plugs, and dynamically reconfigures the DSP. The LPC2468 has probably no problem managing the user interface, so upgrading to "better" algorithms and more features is possibly just a matter of replacing the current DSP by a more powerful one (with all the compatibility issues that will occur...).

I'd vote for a 2 rack space, but with as many knobs etc as it has, I think it's possible to do if properly designed.

It's great how it is. Easy to change settings. Enough space for all the knobs. perfect layout.
Thomann is offering Flight Cases, so there is no problem to take it on the road (except for the software bugs :-))
Long time ago i had a Roland GS-6 , it didn't sound very good, but was just 1 rack space and had at least 9 or 10 knobs, so a 2 space would be able to hold double that #, and still have a nice screen size, but not sure if it would work with the guts of the Kpa as it is now, probably would need a new design of the boards etc.

I would probably keep the original unit, but I must admit that it has some appeal for people that wants to use their own pedals and FXs (aka: Huge Pedalboard)

I personally like the form factor of the kemper , I have alot of pod desktop bean units , they fall off the desk , etc, have had a few floor type units the pod hd500 great for gigging , but in a studio try reaching down to edit settings , ouch my back!! from kneeling on the floor to change settings , the kemper is nice , a rack unit would be ok , but would eliminate half of the controls

thx 4 yr question! 
on the main screen the page buttons have no function, on this unit they will
go to the next 3 pages (stomps,stack,effects) and use the function buttons above the display to activate/edit the section you want
once you've gone one page further (than the main screen) you can use the cursor buttons too, as you see it's not only a rig cursor anymore

I agree - the Pic above is the CPU for I/O and USB

Typically these CPU and DSP boards must be expensive 6 layers with controlled impedance high speed serpintine routes to the memory
The large main board does not require this, and could be a lower cost board with 2 to 4 layers.
Its a very clever approach.

This thread reminds me of 14 years ago when a Japanese shop (TSC Proix) was converting Roland VG-8's to Rack Mount
