Is it possible to assign different functions to an expression pedal plugged into one of the Switch/Pedal jacks, depending on the rig? For example, I want my expression pedal to control volume for almost all rigs, but for one particular rig I want it to control the Manual parameter of the Vowel Filter effect. And for another rig I want it to control the Wah Wah.
different expression pedal functions by rig?

Not that I know, volume and wha are 2 different options of the global settings. If you set it as wha then it will control whatever effect is active with the pedal option (wha, wovel...etc...) but it will not control the volume. At the moment you need a second exp. pedal connected.

Sadly, I think this is a deal breaker for me.

Might it be possible to connect a single pedal to both KPA pedal connectors via an A/B switch?

I just spotted this tip on the FAQ page of the Kemper website:
How to use Wah pedal to control volume occasionally?
In case you are using an expression pedal to control your Wah effects and rarely want to control your volume via pedal, you perhaps don’t need a second pedal. You can activate the Wah Pedal Booster in the X or MOD slot instead and use your Wah pedal to boost the signal. -
Correct, but this will be a pre only assignment.
-
Pre? The X and MOD slots are in the Effects section ...

Problem is I want to control volume the vast majority of the time, not rarely. The exceptions would be for stuff like Wah Wah and Vowel Filter (and, when it's available) pitch shift/harmony.
-
Still would be worth trying to see if it fits your needs ...
-
I can already tell it won't, since it won't help me with the Vowel Filter effect. But I appreciate the advice.

Just FYI, using a midi controller with pedals (e.g. FCB 1010) you can assign pedal functionality on a per- patch basis.
But I agree it would be nice to have in the KPA itself.

Yes yes yes! Perhaps this will appear in the KFC when it is released. Namm 2013 - 24th January? Come on Mr Kemper Sir bring it on!!!! (Pleeeeeeeeze)

How do you set per patch functionality for pedals on FCB1010 ????

You don't have to set it manually. It's per patch behaviour by default. This means that EVERY patch on the FCB has to be programmed in order for the pedals to do what you want.
Hence: Use an editor. I like the one from http://www.lg-fcb.com best. -
I requested this (midi CC assigns) a while ago in this thread that i started http://www.kemper-amps.com/for…&threadID=6150&highlight=, i dont own a KPA (yet at least) but this to me is a essential function and may be a dealbreaker. Its a standard function on Boss/Roland guitar preamps/floorboards and has been for many years, i have it in my Boss GT-pro and Boss VF-1´s.
When speaking of editors for the FCB1010 i recommend this http://host.mtnsys.com:81/faq-fcb/PCEditorBeta.htm that i have been using for years, it has a graphical interface and its free as well.
