Same thing here, got the dreaded flashing red screen as I was shutting down - had done nothing exceptional before it happening, but I'm also using 1.5.4. Pulled the power plug off, waited a few minutes and on the next boot entered maintenance mode (holding the left soft key above the LCD while booting) and did a flash memory format and init, then restored my last backup and it seems stable ever since.

Deny, all that really shouldn't be necessary. I have two KPA's and didn't have any issues at initial startup.

Well I did. Maybe it has to do with the version of firmware that came installed in the unit? I don't know. Mine even started doing the flashing a RED background LCD light last night after I tried turning it off. After the aforementioned procedure it didn't happen anymore.

Gianfranco, can you include a heads up for new owners in the document? As soon as I unboxed my KPA a few days ago I did a firmware update to 1.54, and the monitor out was dead. Needed a system reset, working ok after that. Then whenever I turned my KPA on, right after booting up it would make a loud hiss which would gradually fade out. After a flash memory format and init, that problem also went away. So how about warning new users to:

    1. Do a firmware upgrade
    2. Do a system reset
    3. Do a flash memory format and init

BTW thanks for putting the document together :)

Do you have the NG engaged?

My input section is unlocked so NG is engaged on a per-patch basis, IIRC I've been turning it off completely on cleans and leaving it at around 1-2 for crunch and lead rigs. But what happens doesn't seem related to the noise gate, as soon as the boot process is over and the current profile is loaded there's a loud hiss that after a few seconds slowly fades away and from that point on the unit is silent and operates normally.

Is this behavior normal? Every time I turn my KPA on, after the boot sequence it makes a loud hiss which then slowly fades away as soon as I start playing. The reason I ask is to know if this indicates I need to follow one of the reset procedures (already performed the system reset) like the flash memory wipe. I've only got the Kemper for a few days, its DSP is from November if I'm not mistaken and as soon as I unboxed it I've installed FW 1.54.

I've been close miking my open back 2x12 combo with good results, but am very interested in knowing if there's any way I can improve my profiling process. I'm using a 57 dead center angled 45 degrees towards the speaker cone, that's how it sounds the most natural to my ears.

So OP, you're complaining about performance mode. Do you even know what it does? Are you aware that the current version of the software allows for assigning MIDI program change numbers to rigs, which is more than sufficient for live use?

As far as I'm concerned, the KPA *is* a finished product. I don't need undo/redo (a "compare" button for original vs edited would be nice though). From what I've read in the manual about performance mode, the current MIDI implementation sorta makes it unnecessary.

If I were CK I would remove the "this feature isn't available yet" message and make the Kemper only respond to MIDI messages when the switch is in the performance position and be done with it. I'd rewrite that section of the manual as well to reflect this behavior.

EDIT: Snapshots take care of the "compare" function, apologies. In my defense I've only had the KPA for a few days :P

Can't apply the discount code, tried clearing cookies and still nothing. Weird thing is, when I tried it once some time ago just to test if the discount code was ok it did work, didn't finish the purchase at the time because I was still deciding which profiles to get. Is this a "one time use only" thing?

Already posted this on another Kemper-S/PDIF-11R thread but you guys posting in this one seem to have it figured out, so I'll ask again: my 11R doesn't recognize the Kemper digital clock, it shows the external clock as "invalid or none". How did you guys manage to make them work together? My Kemper arrived a few days ago and I already have firmware 1.54 installed. Did a system reset, but still no output from the S/PDIF out. Do I need to do a flash wipe too in order to have S/PDIF working?

OH MY GOD. Just profiled my Triaxis using a Beta57 that I'd left there secured by a LP Claw for recording. My Triaxis is loaded with NOS Mullard and GE tubes and has one of the most complex tones I've ever heard. Its sensitivity to playing dynamics is also unparalleled as far as I know. Think getting close to Allan Holdsworth or Eric Johnson, but using ONLY one preamp and nothing else, no external pedals, no gimmicks, no tricks, nada. That's what I get from my precious little preamp, and now... from the Kemper as well. This thing is UNBELIEVABLE, I was floored by the factory profiles but this... this is something else. I didn't even have to touch any of the amp or cab parameters after profiling, it was all there. Played with it over a backing track just to be sure and got goose bumps. Damn. I'm hooked for life :)

Just wanted (HAD) to share, as I type this I feel like there's a little kid inside of me screaming and jumping around out of happiness, I'll get around uploading the profile soon enough and let you know ;)

Best xmas gift I've ever given myself :)

Oh btw yep, that's me over TGP as "Guitar Vilain" - the moniker is just a bit of fun over that stupid "Guitar Hero" game :p

    Cheers!

    Wow, thanks a million!!!

Can't wait to get home now, even considering faking sick :P

My Kemper arrived yesterday and cost me the best part of a night of sleep, couldn't let it go before 2am :P

I've been following this thread with great interest since a TS is a fundamental part of many of my favorite tones, so one of the first things I did when I got my hands on my KPA was to test the GS. Set it to what's familiar to me, drive around 2-3, tone at 5-6 and volume at 5-6. So the only parameter I had to "translate" was the tone control, which I set around -2.5. To my ears it sounds very close to my own TS, if not right on the spot (haven A/B'd them). The bottom line is, it's a perfectly usable stompbox and I'm very happy with it.

Now I wonder if the OP is aware how more pronounced the mid hump in this pedal gets when you set the tone at zero, have you tried setting it to -2.5 which would be equivalent to the tone knob set at noon in the real pedal?

Wow, thanks for the warm welcome guys :)

    Welcome aboard!

If you like what you're hearing/feeling on day one, it's only going to get better, a LOT better.

Have you begun to save cabinets?

I've done a lot of reading before ordering my Kemper and even more while it was in the mail, but I am of course still a n00b. Would you mind telling me why saving cabs is important?

    Welcome brother!

If you want, make a some JMP-1 and Triaxis profiles and post them - would love more of those :)

    Enjoy the KPA

Will do, probably during the weekend, let's see how my first profiling session goes. I must say that as awesome as the profiles I've auditioned sound, none of them have the character of the Lead 2 Green from the Triaxis, IMHO one of the most beautiful sounding channels ever made. It's quite mid-heavy though, which I happen to like (think EJ, Shawn Lane). BTW I didn't find a lot of fusion tones with lots of mids among the profiles I've downloaded so far, seems not a lot of KPA users share my taste for those.

Hi Deny and welcome! I always use a UPS to back up the power on my gear, specially if playing open air.

I thought about getting a UPS but since they're a bit heavy I thought it'd defeat a bit from one of the main reasons I got the Kemper in the first place, which is portability. I'm wondering if one or two 2000mAh cellphone batteries would be enough to keep the Kemper running for a few seconds, because if power fails for longer than that it will usually take some time for it to get back and in that case I could afford to wait for the boot time. In any case I wonder if I'm not being a bit paranoid since such power outages have never happened while I was playing. Also I'm considering leaving no more than 300 profiles at any given time in the Kemper, maybe even less than that if I have to take it for a gig.

    Cheers :)

Hello and greetings from Brazil, new fellow Kemper user here :)

Just a little background so you can weight my opinions appropriately: I'm 43, have been playing guitar since I was 11, and my favorite players (and guitar tones) are Eric Johnson and Shawn Lane. My current setup is a Triaxis and a JMP-1 through a custom A/B box and into a G-Major2, plus a custom switcher for auto engaging dirt pedals depending on which patch is currently selected. I also own an Eleven Rack and like it for recording but find it a bit harsh on the top end, which after a while becomes a bit fatiguing to my ears.

Now on to my impressions on the KPA:

At first I was kinda worried that I got a bad unit because the monitor out seemed to be dead. Installed latest firmware, still nothing. After a system reset it was miraculously brought to life, amen! :)

First thing that strikes me is the quality of the factory profiles, I was honestly floored. Playing dynamically on this thing is a lot of fun, kudos to CK for designing the box and also for his profiles which IMHO are among the best I've tried. BTW I've given Amp Factory profiles a go and honestly didn't like them, too much bite and not a lot of harmonic complexity for my tastes.

I must say the routing flexibility on the outputs is pretty impressive too, that was a very pleasant surprise. Also the lo-fi dirtboxes almost made me drool :p

Now all I'm missing is a ducking delay and a few pitch effects (pitch detune, pitch shift/whammy, harmonizer) and I'll be set.

The relatively long boot time got me thinking, what if I connected a backup battery to the KPA for backing it up in case of short power failures (up to a few seconds)? Thought that would be a very good use for that space in the back of the unit ;)

Im really pleased to see many of you still keep this subject open...Ive owned my kemper for over 10 months now and im still having to use a rack just to control my octaves and harmonies. This is very important I feel and should be addressed asap. Love the KPA / Hate the fact that there is still no simple octave lower effect.

Wait, isn't the "Recti shaper" distortion an octaver? I can't tell for sure because my Kemper hasn't arrived yet but I've been reading manuals and forum threads like crazy.

I've just pulled the trigger on a KPA and was quite surprised upon reading the manual that such a feature packed piece of equipment doesn't come with a ducking delay, which with my other gear is used in 99% of my patches. IMHO they should put one in there ASAP.
