BJ is using two Marshall amps modified by Martin Golub in a Live setup combined with a CAE 3+SE preamp where they bypass the Marshalls Preamp sections for clean and mid sounds.

The Marshalls were used in the studio back in the days from what I have read. Now they use all sorts of amps, like modded Park, Hiwatt, Tweed Fender twin, Divided by 13 combo.

As for the profile created by Marko, I read here that it is an amp with the same "Dookie" mod that Green Day uses.
Sounds great as is but sounds better if you change the Cab and use one part of the Siggi Mehl Rigs.
There are plenty of rigs here that gets you close to their core sound (which changes depending on the period)

Recently I am experimenting with one of Gundy Keller rigs called Gundy Brain'sStrayDogs but have to cut back bass, mid and treble. That varies on the period I want to play but so far it sounds pretty close on a Gibson ES335 type guitar and it is pretty versatile.

    Anyway, have fun!

    Hi,

I have the KRK10s combined with Rockit 6 monitors.
I have mixed feelings about my whole speakers decision but I would say they are not really what I was expecting.
Basically I bought these before I became a little more knowledgable in what I'm searching in terms of sound but anyway...

The 10s is very loud. Way too much for the poor Rockit 6. So loud in fact that everything just becomes mud if you are not careful and crank it too much. I was never able to find a good spot for it where the bass would sound fine where i stand while playing. I find that the volume on it is temperamental. At low volume of the main setup, I have to reach and turn it up a little while if I crank the main volume of the whole setup, I have to lower the 10s... It's annoying and I smack my head under the metal braces of the table where it is located almost every time...

Just to give you an idea how loud it is, the 10s volume is between 1/8 and 1/4 of its range and it becomes very nasty when I crank the main setup volume. It's way too loud for a large basement where it is setup. Somewhere else like outside or a stage, I don't know...

I tried to set it up using an audio meter so everything was equal between the monitors and the sub but when I followed KRK recommendations on this, the sound was really bad and the bass was ridiculously loud and muddy sounding. My wife thought the house would come down and of course I was blasting it on purpose because it was funny but that only lasted a little while. :)

Anyway, your mileage may vary... Now that I know a little better, I think the 10s is good to crack the studs of your house, break concrete or even your sternum if you feel like it. Also pretty good for dance, techno and rap music but not so much for guitar playing even with a backing track.

    My 2 cents. Cheers,

    Marc.

When you plug your stick in the Front USB port of the Kemper Rack you should see after a few seconds a new label appearing in the third position of the display screen just under the 3rd soft button that says "External Storage". By pressing that soft button you should be able to access all the functions pertaining to import/export Rigs, backup/restore and also format the stick.

I have the Toaster version so both USB ports are on the back of the unit and the square one is on its side. By taking a look at the rack pictures, I noticed that the port is also upside down in comparison to what we are used to but it obviously doesn't make a difference which side it is.

Check the Kemper reference manual on Page 79 which explains the whole thing.

Ok, soon after I posted my message, I got it working... If my posting was the trigger to make things work I should have done that before...

Anyway, the documentation is definitely wrong and some part of their explanation is backwards.

So, I will try to give you a clearer case scenario, a simple one (in decimal notation).

Say I want to remotely control the Amplifier switch On and Off via NRPN.
The documentation says that the Amplifier On/Off switch sits at these 2 positions: 10 and 2
    - 10 being the Address Page (MSB)
    - 2 being the Address Number (LSB)

I have to assign a value for both the Address Page (10) and the Address Number (2)
10 can have only two states in this case because it is a switch (On = 1 or Off = 0)
2 will always be zero in this case because this is a switch and there is nothing else to fine-adjust

Note that I am sending these midi Control Changes one after the other, in the following sequence for my first successful test.

So here is the Midi Monitor dump of sending the Amplifier switch to Off:

(The #1 repeating itself is the midi channel number I use)
(Also, the Kemper requires CC38 to commit the change even if the value is 0 )

    Control 1 99 10
    Control 1 98 2
    Control 1 6 0
    Control 1 38 0

Next, to turn it back On again:
    Control 1 99 10
    Control 1 98 2
    Control 1 6 1
    Control 1 38 0

The documentation has the MSB( 99 ) and LSB ( 98 ) ordering sequence and meaning backwards...

Now, I have to figure out more complex parameters like gain and mix controls.

    Cheers,

    Marc.

    Hey guys,

I have been trying to understand this document (from the document downloads section) and I am completely lost.

I can use normal program changes, Control changes but when I get to NRPN, the document seems wrong or is not well explained, or just too cryptic.

The document says to send (in order) CC 99, 98, 06, 38. with their associated values, doesn't work (from Logic 9).

Other sites as well as Wikipedia are saying to send 98 before 99... Doesn't work either...

On page 1, the first table says that 98 is MSB but should really be LSB. Same for 99 as it says it is LSB but it should be MSB... ?(

In the example given on the bottom of page 1, they mix decimal and hexadecimal values (in the little Hex dump) and they mention that the delay mix is at RNPN 9475... It should be at 7403...

Anyhow, nothing works and I am getting quite upset with all of this and trying to make sense of it.

    Any guidance ?

    Thanks,

    Marc.

    These sound great Maurizio,

You could start your own "Signature Tones" video series à la Gundy Keller with stuff like this 8)

I would love to see a few of your tweaks described in details so I can understand more how to get closer to the sounds I am searching myself.

    Cheers,

    Marc.

Quick feedback for a new Tokai ES135 I just bought from Lance.

The guitar is simply phenomenal and Lance customer service, superb. Price was very good and the instrument breathes quality and playability.

Very impressed for the $$ I paid.

I didn't know the original 1959 Gibson ES335 but by reputation, the Tokai ES135 is based on that model.
After less than a few hours exploring and getting used to its particular behaviour and sound (in a very good way), I was able to dial-in pretty much all the tones I wanted in a pretty consistent way using different KPA amps and settings than from my other guitars. It's a good thing since its making me explore the KPA even more also.

The guitar by itself is a flawless beauty and the intonation is the best I have ever experienced from a brand new instrument that has traveled more than 3/4 of the World in cargoholds.

It's been only a week since a received my Tokai and I don't regret it one single bit. I'm really starting to love it and it brings out stuff in my playing that I wasn't even aware of.

    Cheers,

    Marc.

Thanks Paul. You took the words right out of my mouth. I'll be 62 in a couple of months too, and I know exactly where you're coming from.

I totally agree with this. This forum is a no fuss and cool place to learn from pros and very talented people and even having CK chiming in quite often. Because of all of you guys I've been on an exponential learning curve for the past 8 months, even before I decided to buy a Kemper.

Don't spoil it, I think we have something special here...

There are plenty of sites to bash around freely.

Everything comes in time and I like when this time is spent creating things that are of quality and thought thru. Slapping stuff together is too easy and would be an insult to most of us.

    The editor will come.

Not sure it was ever suggested but what about a web Wiki where everyone could contribute?

I love the wiKPA, don't get me wrong, I mainly read it when I'm flying and forced to be offline or slouched on the couch. The amount of work Viabcroce has put in there is just jaw breaking.

A web Wiki could be the next step on top of the phenomenal work Viabcroce has put together as a solid foundation. Since everyone could revise every little piece of info, hopefully the sum of US could make a difference.

Again Viabcroce, thank you for being THE ONE who helped me make my decision to buy a Kemper. Your contribution is simply amazing.

    Hello guys,

First off, I am not a pro, far from it so I have a little difficulty finding some of the words to describe the problem.

Today, I was exploring the effects offered by the Kemper and was playing with the High Pass filter in Slot A.
Maybe this is not where I should place it but this is how I discovered the behaviour.

I am using the Twin 1 Clean rig from Kemper Amps, using default values.
I put the High Pass filter in slot A with default values and that's it, no other effects in the chain passed that point. Not even reverb.

Now I was testing my new Tokai ES135 potential and when I enabled the High Pass, it does what it is supposed to unless I strum quite aggressively.

When I do that, the high pass filter seems to bleed parts of a much louder distorted sound towards the end of the strum (Also strange because the rig I used is a super clean sound).

I thought that it might be that I was clipping something but no... I tried many different settings of the Clean Sense to be sure.
Input and output lights are not red and well in the green zone.

To be even more certain of the problem I tried the same with my Brian Moore guitar (SD passive HB pickups) and the behaviour is even easier to reproduce.

    Could someone confirm the behaviour?

    Thanks,

    Marc.

EDIT: I just realized that the High pass is in the Wah section... I have no pedal plugged in at the moment. In the details of the High Pass filter on page 2 Pedal Mode is ON.

The weird bleeding sound I am talking about resembles a little bit like a short burst of a bit shaper effect cranked to the max.

    Welcome Bluzkat!

A KPA is phenomenal to own and this forum is a fantastic place to be.
Learning everyday from the forum. I have been on an exponential learning curve for the last 6 months.

Help me, my brain is full... Actually no, not really... Keep it coming!
