I'm trying to make the sustain a LOT shorter on a bass guitar sound.
I've used the KPA comp with a longish attack and a lot of squish but it's actually making the sustain longer.
It doesn't seem to work like a standard compressor. Any tips please?

I also love my Les Paul, like you I had the nut changed for tuning purposes and it's now fine in that respect.
I got this present LP Studio in 2004 to replace my ageing LP custom now being used as a slide guitar.
On both instruments the sound is beautifully focused and it plays like a dream, so fluid and vocal.
I also have a Strat and a couple of other makes but I use those guitars for specific sound and feel, they are tools of the trade
to me whereas the Les Paul's are a love affair. My big regret was selling a Les Paul Gold Top Deluxe years ago, I was young and fu**ing stupid and I still kick myself years later.
MPB, the neck is a godsend for people who haven't got the slender finger thing going on but if you don't like it, you don't like it.Slightly off topic has anyone tried one of these? I must admit to getting a chubby on looking at the picture

I've done/do tons of guitar sessions (not as many these days but still a fair few)
If I could get away with not using a miked up amp in a studio I would, and I didn't use modellers, just various effects to get the sound straight in to the desk.
That worked fine 70% of the time. The Kemper is a godsend.Saying that... I do like a bit of amp porn and I still have a couple of amps or three.

Is it the 4th bass note per bar with the boom?
I think I went through that and cut at 180hz but it's still jumping out? -

Not arrogant at all, glad for the help.The main frequencies are around 160-180 and 50Hz.
I can surgically remove a touch of the 160-180 so it's not that much of an issue.
But If say, I boost a little 50Hz to get some real bottom end it sounds fine at 2 feet but booms out at 4 feet.
The same (as far as I can tell) frequency on my commercial reference does not do this. As you say, the frequencies may not be exactly the same but they sound it to me
and I've stuck the commercial track through an eq analyser to confirm this. -
When mixing the bass end of a track I always seem to have the same issue.
The bass is never consistent over distance - it sounds great at a foot or 2 away but there's always a peak at say, 4 feet distance which disturbs the whole balance of the mix.
I understand there are physics at play but listening to a commercial release the bass is always pretty consistent over distance with no peaks or troughs on the very same speakers/room that I mix in.
I eq and compress but can never get it right.
Any tips or techniques that people use to overcome this?

Another question, say I copy a patch into a folder and I work on that patch.
It seems to save it on the original patch and not the one in the folder - Is that correct?
