Well friend, I did take some time to compare side by side with a custom Mesa 2x12 that I had back in June. I was playing around with a Yorkville FRFR passive monitor which is by no means a great unit but it is decent enough. Believe it or not, I preferred the Mesa because as I am so used to 30+ years of playing with that 12" speaker cranked behind me.
What changed for me was when a friend of mine invited me over to profile my amp on his Kemper. I had returned mine due to an issue with it shutting off regularly. He was leaving the country for a bit on business and wanted to record some tracks with my amp profiled on it. I noticed he had the atomic CLR sitting in the corner. He also has an Axe FX II.
I then played through my amp. We took the profile of my amp on his Kemper and played it through the CLR. I was a bit shocked to say the least. He needed his Kemper to take with him but he offered me his Axe II and the CLR for a few weeks as he would not be needing them. That is when I started playing around with it and realizing that I could get used to things. I had an opportunity to play around with it on a stage setting along with my amp and realized that I really don't need as much stage volume with the CLR because as Ingolf said, there is no beaming of the sound. It spreads really well.
That was when I realized that I can totally get used to this. In any case, I have returned the amp (after I profiled it of course!) and now I only have my Kemper.
In the next few months, I'm going to try several different FRFR versions including the Line6 LTM, the Yamaha DSR112, and if possible a Mackie HD1221. My end goal is to get the Atomic product. Tom King is a great guy to deal with and has always emailed me or called me back if I needed info. I'm just hoping the exchange rate changes a bit up here because right now, I'd take a bath on the purchase with the duties and taxes. For about $200-300 less, I can get something local that dare I say, is also excellent for FRFR. However, I really like the science behind the Atomic product, so that will be my end goal.
I'm still going to get myself a smaller tube combo. Marshall is apparently coming out with something from Satriani in the new year at Namm. If it is a smaller version of that head, then I am sold because when I owned a JVM410HJS, it was fantastic. If not that then the new Mesa Mark V 25 will do nicely for me.
