Always. Every single time. When it comes to recording a riff and not just noodling with a new preset pack or something, it immediately becomes necessary. Especially for high gain presets. At least HP-LP filters at effect section plus the amp-EQ.
I use pre EQ too to clean the low-end and sometimes boost a little the mids before the amp. (Its not the same like putting a clean booster)
This is interesting because many presets sound good at first, especially if you play with for at least 8-10 minutes. Then you record it, listen to it and oh, it's very sharp, or a lot of the bottom, the walls are "shaking" when I damp.
A lot of people are interested in the editor, nothing special about it. Many of us, including myself, desperately need it. I am amazed at how many impatient, urgent messages have been here over the last 2-3 months. However, I am genuinely surprised that today is August 28th and they still haven't released it. I also saw the NAMM video in January, where they showed the software to the public and said it would be released during the summer. I don't urge them, but I hope we can try out the editor in September and we don't have to wait until the last quarter of the year.

I find myself boosting a majority of profiles to sharpen them. Might have to look elsewhere.
If you are looking for high gain, boosted (or well responsive to boost) high quality profiles for metal and rock, check them out, I think they are the best at the moment. (Refine the sound is essential, at least HP and LP filter, especially if you're recording but I think you know it. :))

I can't comment on DI packs because I only have studio packs (with unpowered Kemper) so I can try out many cabinets with speakers and microphones - fortunately there are plenty of options in the studio packs.

Choptones is a great choice. I think there is no "instant perfect" solution (if you chase THE sound ) but yes, I also recommend their profiles because they are made with quality equipment and can be easily customized.
