profiles from www.soundside.de - my opinion

  • The stock KPA profiles take an incredible amount of tweaking to sound OK....they come very dark and bassy with little clarity.

TBH, I find weird such a statement can be made. Nothing personal of course! :D
There are too many factors to the final sound, including individual taste, personal technique, the instrument/PUs, and the loudspeakers.
I almost always use HBs, and I neved had the impression stock profiles were bassy or muddy on a whole On the contrary, I find some of them quite thin and piercing. Of course there are some which sound bassy and muddy with my gear and for my tastes.

As a side note, I have no interest in rigs which don't require tweaking: they are amps, not simple presets. Whenever I plug my guitar in an amp I always tweak it to fit my taste, instrument and needs.
I'm also well aware that a rig which sounds bad by itself can be perfect for a certain mix, and the other way round.
In general, we should keep in mind that each profile sounded good to the author's ear for the applocation/used gear.

    :)

  • I didn't have the same experience with the Stock rigs - I think there are many, many really good Stock rigs. But, I record many styles of music, and use guitars to suit the style and rig.

If I was using one type of guitar, fewer rigs would have been useful. Some (Stock AND third party) rigs sound too dark with humbuckers, some other rigs sound too bright with single coils.

The speakers used to listen to the Kemper also have a huge influence on the sound. If all of the factory sounds have a problem in common when using multiple types of guitars, it may be an issue with the accuracy of the speakers someone is using.

The original Factory Rigs were designed for studio systems that may have flatter response than most home studios, that definitely have flatter response than PA monitors, and have much flatter response than using a guitar cabinet.

  • Yea I can't say all the stock profiles are bad... The "69" ac30 as well as ac drive are two of my main ac30 tones that I use live and in the studio... Both were done with a 121 and I love that mic on that amp personally... Those two profiles have gotten more use than ALOT of my rigs live and in the studio, as well as variations of it ( boost up front etc)... Can not go wrong with that profile and a tele or even a Les Paul, works with all my guitars. Badcat hotcat profile is right up there too.

  • Everybody can find sonic bliss with the profiler.

+1. I just got back from a gig and I am still in awe at what the Kemper does and how great it sounds. And in addition to the commercial profiles (Andy, Armin and Top Jimi all have fantastic rigs at very fair prices) I think there are a lot of very usable profiles on the RE - more than I have time to experiment with actually and I am very thankful to everyone who had taken the time to profile and then post them for the rest of us.

  • Agreed 100%! Same experience here.

  • These are among my favourites as well.

Armin's AC30 ist MUCH better and also the the AC30 HW from RE (Reznor) is great, but that's my taste and everybody's taste is different... ;)

I'm working nearly all the time in excellent studios and my home-studio is equipped very well, too (as close to flat response as possible). I haven't made the experience that the KPA-presets sound well, Armin's and Andy's profiles sound much better. Most presets sound dull and I'm missing the liveness and warmth of the original amps.

I'll stay 90% with Armin, Andy and my own profiles (Dr. Z Maz Sen., Boogie MK2, Fender Blues Junior, THD Univalve), the KPA-presets don't do it for me, there are also some really good profiles on RE like the Morgan 20 from rmpacheco, GT-75 from B.Dinnies, THD 3 - Brown from HAYS and Mark V from Bjorn Gottfridsson.

I don't know the newer profiles from RE, it just takes too much time for me to separate the wheat from the chaff.

  • haha i mean, while my point was not a comparison of the stock rigs to soundsides but rather stating I believe that some of the stock rigs are great, I don't agree :) I have armins entire ac30 pack, as well as reznors....Alot of armins profiles in my opinion and for MY tastes, do not have the low end warmth and low mid punch that alot of andys profiles do, or profiles such as that stock 69 ac30....They almost seem to have a high pass on them that I personally don't like. With that said, armin often uses the sm7b to mic his amps and make his profiles, which I'm also not particularly fond of, but again this is all personnal taste. I do think armins ac30 is good: I mean it definitely sounds and feels like an ac30, no doubt about it. However I look at it as a picture, it wasn't maybe taken at the angle I would have particularly liked :) On another note, I have not revisited his ac30 since the new firmware updated the cab parameters and how they work, which I use alot now recently to get a bigger low end response similar to that of a 4x12 cabinet, so this may very well be worth revisiting. I'm just pretty picky I guess, anything outside of a sm57, or a 57/121 combo, I'm really not into it: and armin has said many times that he profiles his amps to get what they sound like in the room, not necessarily a good recorded/studio tone/live tone: not to say they can't because they ,most CERTAINLY can. ALSO, with that said, his 57 deluxe, which just happens to be micd with a single sm57, is, like many others, one of my go to rigs and gets used at almost every show I play, and almost all the time in the studio...

*edit* also for what its worth guenter, i love your demo of the ac30 on soundsides website, sounds great.

I don't use any effects (high pass) or whatever for any of my profiles.
    All I use is (amp)-(speaker)-(mic/mics)-(mic pre)-(KPA).
IMHO is it easier to add some more bass then to add missing high end....
... and while a little bit more bass sounds great in the bedroom or at low levels - it may not sound this great when used at band level.
But ok - it's a matter of taste - and therefor are the KPA tone controls.

Soundside profiles don't use any EQ's (jhardware or software) - just RAW profiles.

The SM7B is a great mic IMHO - I have used it for a few of the profile packs.

Thank you for the hint - I'll update my profile text's in the next time - and include the used mic(s) for each pack.

I defintively disagree with your statements:

    1) Armin uses a variety of mikes, not just the SM7B

    2) In my opinion a profile should be an authentic snapshot of the real amp. Armin's profiles are raw (no eqs, no tweaking ect.), better get the raw amp and then tweak by yourself.

Of course everything's a matter of taste, not to forget that every guitar-player is totally different in his playing and gear. I like to play vintage strats and teles, somebody else likes ESP guitars with EMG's, the same profile will sound completely different. I play heavy pics (1.14mm), somebody else prefers light ones, my strings are 010, somebody else might use thinner or thicker ones and so on.....

  • Yes, right - I have used a lot of different mics since I started profiling ...

This is what I use currently

After having tried out many rigs (TAF, SOUNDSIDE, ROKPAK, PT) I totally agree. Even compared to the present higher standards after quite some KPA expierience I still like the rigs of KEMPER, FISCHER, WIENSTROER, J. NAVARRO, BALLANTINE, NASHVILLE STUDIO, N. CONNOR, HAYS, M. FRANZKOWIAK, U. BOSSERT, M. NERMARK, P. TURLEY and some other contributers I don't remember offhand. These were the "heroes" of my first steps with the KPA and some of them absolutely stunned me. Till now I'm a big fan of the Bassman 59 rigs done by J. Navarro.
True enough, some of them only deliver their hidden treasures with specific guitar types (GRETSCH, Strat, Tele, Paula, Epiphone Casino or the like. The only guitar that was hard to please with these first rigs was my time honoured Rick 360.

I'd like to thank all these guys for their wonderful contributions.

Do I need to mention that all of the above is just my humble opinion and no absolute truth..

Just open your ears and your heart and feel your fingers joy!

    'nuff said!

  • Yes, there are a lot of great profiles availabe right out the box - and many other profiles offered beside the ones from soundside - use what works best for you.

One of the main differences - soundside profiles vs the others - are:
    - we give you A LOT of profiles from the same amp - with allmost alll possible settings
    - we try to capture the "amp in the room sound" as close as possible
    - all our packs contain RAW unchanged profiles
    - most packs include additional mix ready profiles with advanced KPA settings and effects
