I will give this one a little boot. Using applications in the studio like PreSonus Studio One and their Control Link feature will give engineers a quick and easy way to map parameters to any controller they prefer. All that would be required would be the USB MIDI feature driver. Well, maybe not required, but it sure would be nice. All my other MIDI devices are controlled this way and I have not connected them using a DIN 5 for longer than I can remember!
