If the profiles were made at gig volumes, they’ll be EQd with less highs, typically. thus mud at lower volumes.

check out your config options for the headrush.. does it have a subwoofer option?

My name is Mike Goodwin. I've been hanging around the gear forums for over 2 decades now. There aren't many amps I haven't owned or tried. If only the Kemper had been around in my amp slut days! All those great amps would not be 'lost'.

Around 2007, I heard some early discussions about the Axe FX ... the rumor was that it was a modeler that finally got the feel right, and the Axe FX Standard was a game changer. I owned the Standard for a few years, but it still wasn't exactly 'there' for me. Back to tube amps...

Fast forward to 2013 or so, and I was finding pretty convincing recordings of the Axe II. At that point I slowly got rid of all my tube amps. When the Axe 3 arrived on the scene, I wasn't immediately convinced that it was significantly better than the Axe II. But after 2 years or so, I gave in and bought the Axe 3. At this point I was so impressed with the Axe 3, that I didn't think there was room for improvement. I tried to stay away from the tweaking rabbithole, and did, for the most part.

Fast forward to several months ago, when I decided to pop into Soundpure and try a Kemper Stage they had in stock. From the first chord, I knew there was something better about the Kemper. I'm not the best at describing tone, but the high end just sounds so natural. I have a strong connection with the Axe FX gear, and always will, but this was a big shift for me.

After experimenting with tons of profiles ( I bought everything from Tonejunkies, their profiles are fantastic!) I decided to dabble in profiling. My first results were mixed, but I knew with time I would find the formulas.

Fast forward a few months, and I picked up a Redplate Magica. It's a somewhat hard to find amp with a bunch of tones that ranged from Fender cleans to blues to fusiony tones (check out the Matt Schofield's Magica clips on youtube!), to 80s metal and even into modern territory (this amp has boatloads of low end!). I made quite a few bad profiles, started learning the 'trade' , and now I have some profiles that are truly representative of the great tones from this amp.

Why stop there I said? So I decided to go after some amps that I didn't find well represented in the Kemper community, and stumbled across a guy in Russia who makes great preamps that are rare or discontinued. One is a certain preamp from the late 80s early 90s with 3 channels and a distinctive purple faceplate. They fetch 4 grand if you can find them, and you'll have to be quick when they pop up. He also had his version of a famous light blue 4 channel preamp from the same timeframe, known for it's superfat tones, the artist most associated with it being Jerry Cantrell from Alice in Chains.

That will be the focus of Rare Amps, acquiring and profiling hard to find amps.

So I have 54 profiles of these 3 amps, which I will offer as an introductory package. While I think they sound great, I will let the public be the judge. Also in the pack will be a handful of profiles of a small builder that I met at one of the Amp Shows in NY years ago. They are way under the radar ... the owner is a super nice guy, I'd love to see his amps getting more attention.

Right before I discovered the Kemper, I sold off my cabs as they were just taking up space. So these profiles were all made with my friend's ported 1X12 with a Neo V30. Turns out all 4 amps sound great with this cab. For mics, I'm using either SM57s or Sennheiser MD421s.

I'm offering this package for $20. I really welcome constructive criticism. If these profiles are well-liked, I will be investing in some more cabs, speakers, and mics and even a (gasp!) website where you can listen to profiles and make payments.

I have some clips under way that should be complete this weekend. I will make these available in wav format. I certainly don't expect any sales without clips, just getting the word out ahead of time (in addition to learning profiling I've been learning recording - it's convenient being able to clean up my flubs so easily!). The profiles will be there to showcase sustain, tone, clean-up, dynamics, overtones, etc ... not flashy playing.

Stay tuned for more details, coming this weekend. If you have any questions, you can reach out to me at [email protected].

I didn't like many that came delivered with the unit. But his Grab n Go pack are really good. It's been said, he's a country player, uses p90S, and as such I pretty much like all his low to mid gain profiles. He has a few really good Plexi patches, but I agree that most of his higher gain stuff doesn't work for me.

There are so many profiles out there you just have to find someone who 1) uses the same gear as you 2) likes the same kinda music and 3) dials in amps like you would. It may take a while to find that person .... or .... hey .... roll yer own.

Get a decent edge of breakup profile, there are so many. I’ve owned a bunch of amps to get his tone, and the cab is the biggest factor. A JBL 15” is my favorite. It’s the only cab that can get the whomp of SRVs 13 gauge strings.

Start with a Lenny tone, push it with a boost to get to edge of breakup, and then hit the GS for leads.

and...... play hard! Very hard! Get down to bare wood with some self-relicing....

The new one is up, TOMASMETALSENN.

I'm not exactly sure what happened with this one, it ended up way more metal sounding than the actual amp. But it sounded cool, so I stuck with it. I even backed the gain off a bit.

Thanks, Micha22, for checking it out.

The profile is based on the sound of a Tomaszewicz TZZ17. Voxy cleans to highly saturated gain.

Posted the rig today, TomasHBgn8, see if you like it.

The TZZ17 videos on YouTube are not very good for OD tones, the OD tones are closer to this video, the higher wattage models.

OK I got what I consider a pretty good representation of my amp. It's a Tomaszewicz TZZ-17. Fantastic under the radar amp. To my ears, it has the compression of a Dumble, but I voicing of a hot-rodded Marshall. Tons of sustain. At clean settings, it reminds me of a Vox, definitely.

In this profile, I'm using a humbucker-equipped Strat. I have the green scream on, but turn it off for a more Plexi-type drive level (or just reduce your guitar volume ... it won't clean up super well with the green scream on, but it will give you many shades of gain). With my strat (Duncan Custom) I keep the GS on and use the guitar volume between 7 and 10.

I added a little bit of reverb and delay, very light amounts. Again, turn off if that's your preference.

It's TomasHBgn8 on Rig Exchange. ( I didn't see a way to link from RE)

yeah I got a profile now. The Senn421 has this plastic part that needs to be plugged in, I guess. Don't laugh guys everyone starts somewhere.

I can handle experimenting with mic positions... its levels that I think are my issue. I know there's documentation on recording so I'll do research before I ask.more questions..

Like I said, I have a dirty vox lightly broken up tone. I usually find my profiles sound best without being too loud at 4 on the master (for home playing) which leaves plenty of headroom for playing out, if that happens.

It was the mic. The SM57 worked.

So I busted my cherry on profiling. It was over fast and the results were less than spectacular. But you can't beat the thrill of the first time ;)

I have a level issue I need to sort out. The profile came out distorted. I messed with the levels bit, and tried again, no distortion, but very thin.

So most of my profiles seem to be at a volume I like at 4 (green lights), so I shoot for my max volume somewhere in that vicinity, and use the amp volume control to even them out. That's typically loud enough to bother my neighbor, so I keep it to daytime hours.

The first amp I am doing is a dirty/clean Vox sound with some grit. The reference amp is louder than I typically play for the tone I am shooting for. How do i go about balancing the levels to get that tone at slightly lower volume (I know Fletcher-Munson, and I will lose a little, but it shouldn't be as thin as what I am getting in my profile)

Mic positioning ... and levels, have to be the culprit. I will experiment, but any tips are welcome.

    I believe it's a Senn 421. Amp is a Tomaszewicz TZZ17.

I'm fairly sure I need a mic preamp. Not sure why my buddy didn't tell me that, he knows Im new at this.

So if I need to go to GC tomorrow to pick up a mic pre, and I don't have any future goals to be a studio engineer :) what should I look for? I also think I will buy an audio interface for recording while I'm there, would that power the mic?
