BTW, this thread has me lusting again for a early Yamaha SG, I'd just sit and play late 70's Santana licks or Big Country tunes on it. Never had one in 35 years of playing, and they look SO fine. Why didn't Gibson ever make a double cut LP just like it?
How to love a Les Paul

No - the Yamaha had pointier cutaways. The Gibson was a copy of the Hamer Sunburst
-
My point is only that it's the LP cutaway. The Yamaha SG is a copy of the Gibson SG, which is what Gibson already makes (which funny enough used to be called the Les Paul after the original Les Paul was discontinued in the 60's for a few years). It wouldn't make much sense for Gibson to make a double cutaway that looks like their SG and call it an LP.

Yep, SG means second generation as it was supposed to be an evolution of the LP

I think it means "Solid Guitar"

From what I once read it is a common mistake people do as the origin of the name is 2nd gen. Who knows

I suspect Gibson knows http://www.gibson.com/News-Lif…n-sg-facts-0408-2011.aspx

yep, I know that.
I can't find back the link but what I once read is that the SG initially came out as direct replacement of the LP (true for sure) and thus was first named LP (2nd gen) SG. Les Paul himself asked Gibson not to use his name for this guitar he did not like and the name moved to Solid Guitar. Don't know if this is true but I like the story
edit: sorry for being out of topic and please note there is no intention to "educate" (or miseducate) anyone here.

Yeah, everything else than the "second generation" is true - and even that part may be true, I've just never heard it before
(and sorry for the OT post from me as well :-))

Just to add some chilli to the mustard... I´ve got a very simple LP standard from 2013. Before they added auto tuners etc... I´m really happy with it, just takes a lot of tuning on the G and B strings. Probably owing to the angle of bite on the string at the nut. TBH, I like the 22 fret length and the string tension. What is lacking is the PUP output, but you can compensate for that.
I´m happy to have an LP that doesn't sound muddy she´s very trebly. of my 3 electrics she´s low of the MJ Mastercaster to be topped by my PRS 408 for output and treble. I love all of these guitars, especially Matthias Jab´s stage guitar (see avatar). Signed but no serial number. He used this one until around 2002.
Take care and enjoy your sounds!
Jim.
