Exactly. I hear this argument from Kemper critics all the time and it is just so ridiculous. There is some idiot on youtube that made a video that was four hours long about how unethical and illegal the kemper is. Half of hid rant was about how amp manufacturers lose money from returns. Certainly worth a watch if you ever wondered how bias and lying work.

This thread took a great turn. The reason modern pop music sounds so similar is because it was all written by the same small group of writers. The same way movies have fought risk with remakes the record companies hire the same few hit writers to make sure songs are familiar to sell. Music really has been proven to have gotten worse in the last 17 years by science.

Marshall coukd do this. Imagine profiles of amps that don't yet exist.
-
I agree that purchasing an amp with the intention to profile then return is unethical. I doubt people really do that very often though.
-
Remember kids what your uncle taught you. "With a great profile comes great responsibility."
-
It's not about a trademark issue. It's more about invention and design. That's where the sweat comes in.
Making great profiles takes a lot of time and back breaking effort. It is definitely not cool to take those profiles and sell without permission. If I was a profile producer I would not mind if people gave one or two of my profiles to a friend. To me that is like how mix tapes worked in the 80's. It just spreads awareness and will make you more money in the long run. I would think it would be more profitable to offer the profiles for free but make money elsewhere with advertising or something similar.

You are making me want one. I just am too used to running the Kemper through a real guitar cab I don't know if I can go to FRFR land. I will say the grass does indeed appear very green over there.

One thing I am really confused on is, how can a profile actually be trademarked? Are you trademarking your amp settings, the profile process? I find it weird that if you trademark the amp and settings, then would I be in a legal issue to create a profile of the same amp with the same settings? If you trademark the process then, could I be in a legal issue if I used the same mics, preamps etc? It does seem unethical to resale someone elses profiles but in the end would it really hold up in any court? Would the expense be even worth it?
I don't think it would hold up in court. Look at the world of real amplifiers. Almost all of the amps being sold today are copied from Marshall designs that were copied from Fender designs. A great example is the Peavey 5150. It was copied from the Soldano SLO100 which Mesa claims was a copy of one of their Mark amps. -
Sounds like a sweet setup!

I hate DRM. I much prefer we work together to stop this kind of thing. I have purchased legit profiles on ebay. Maybe we need a white list kemper users can check to see if the seller is legit?
-
That is great. We will see if another post pops up in a few days. On a side note this pack did help me discover another profile maker and I was able to grab a few packs from for a reasonable price.

Well said Raunch. I totally agree. I have a few hundred profiles I have purchased and I only really use 10 or so of them on a regular basis. If you have a few good cabs to use this number could be smaller. I have a dream theater tone I use, a couple megadeth profiles and some that are going for the 80's shred sound. I want to make sure our professional profilers keep making new products for us. I mainly wanted to let everyone know that those ebay packs are pirated work. There are plenty of amazing free profiles on the exchange to play almost anything.

Is this the guy? Looks like a bootlegger to me.That is one of them I saw that looked like bootleggers. I think I counted at least 10 sellers that looked questionable.

There is a fair bit of that going on. Report it to Ebay would be my suggestion.
THANKS a million for bringing this up, I'm sure others will have better actions to take.
I find it strange that I have never encountered a pirated profile on Bit torrent but I ran into this on Ebay.

I purchased and ebay auction of Kemper Profiles and it appears that the seller just took a bunch of commercial packs and is selling them for a few bucks online. Obviously this is not cool. Is there a way I can report this to someone that can do something or are profiles in some kind of grey area legally?
