2 broken 12" speakers in the same day with powerhead¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡gggggggggggCAUTION

  • The web is full of BS.

There is not such a thing like Tube-Watt or SolidState-Watt in the world of physics.

The speaker does not care if you kill it with 10 times "more Watt's" coming from a tube amp or SS amp.

    Read the article again. sigh

There's absolutely nothing about "tube watts" being more powerful. Put a bit more brain power into your reading.

tl:dr : "headroom" prevents "clipping distortion" that will "overdrive" SS power amps to send too powerful a signal.

Tube amps on the other hand don't need that extra headroom because they usually compress and distort in a pleasant sounding way. SS amps do not.

  • Yes, of course a (normal) SS amp clips hard while a tube amp clips softer - that is nothing new.

Many people kill their home stereo speakers (during a party) because they use to low wattage amps - and let them clip.

Nothing new - but the "solution" is not to let people connect a 600Watt amp to a 30Watt speaker and let them play WAY to loud.

The solution (as in most high class active speakers) is to fit the amp to the speaker.

So some clever "simulated soft clip" and a "maximum power" setting would be the best solution for the danger of connecting a 600Watt amp to a 30Watt (or even 100Watt) speaker.

  • Yes, the article is good to read - the main point for the powered KPA & guitar speaker is this:

"So we (guitarists) need a “foolproof” speaker/amp combo such that when the amp runs its hottest all night (tube or guitar SS), it won’t overheat and overwork the speakers. Therefore we need speakers that are MORE powerful than the amp, so the speakers won’t sweat and burn up when pushed hard, so in this case the amp should be about HALF as powerful as the speakers, so we can just crank it, and forget it"

  • This article is far from being flawless and written by an amateur. Actually it is not true that a SS amp is prone to kill speakers. Clipping an amp does not result in double power. I can give you the full story after the weekend if you like.

The Profiler needs this power as a peak headroom to faithfully play speakers at a reasonable loudness. If you play at volumes that a tube amp would produce, you will not exceed the wattage a tube amp would put out.
While thousands of powered Profilers are out there, we don't even have a handfull of reports about blown speakers.

The OP reports reports that the speakers blew at a reasonable volume. There must be another reason than an exceeded wattage.
