SPDIF: Kemper->Behringer FCA610->Imac

  • Hi community, after reading lots of SPDIF - threads, my problem still isn't solved, so please give me some good advice.
I'd like to connect my Kemper to my imac, here's the chain:

Kemper->SPDIF-Out->Behringer FCA610 SPDIF-In->USB-Connection to iMac; DAW is Logic Pro; when opening up the system settings, a signal is shown, but the speakers remain silent, same thing when connecting headphones to the named interface.
What am I doing wrong ? As a signal is shown, the problem must be located somewhere in Logic I suppose...

  • Hi Niki,

    1. Connect some headphones to the phones "A"
    2. Switch "Digital Select" to COAX
    3. Turn MIX BAL in middle position
    4. Check the IN MONITOR in the phones section. The LED should be lit. (Don't know how you switch it on/off, maybe it just detects the MIX BAL position?)
    5. Check the Synchronisation setting in the Behringer's control panel. It must be set to 44.1kHz and something like "External" or "S/PDIF" (not Device Internal Clock).

Now you should be able to hear the sound from your Profiler. This device has "Direct Monitoring" which is common in today's audio interfaces. So it can't be related to Logic.

    Cheers,
    Martin

  • Thanks for your answer, Martin, but still there's no sound...just to get sure: Do I need two SPDIF connections, one the way I'm using it as written, and a second one from the FCA SPDIF Out to the Kemper's In ?

  • The connection from FCA to Kemper is only necessary if you want to reamp DI tracks using S/PDIF.
In your case, you just want to listen first.

    Ok, troubleshooting:
Connect the headphones to the Kemper Profiler. Do you hear yourself playing?
If yes (and I hope it is yes):
Go to the Output menu of your Profiler (press and hold the OUTPUT button until the menu appears)
Then on page 1/5 check if your S/PDIF Output has Master Stereo assigned. If not, select it.
Then go to page 5/5 and set the SPDIF volume to e.g. -5.0dB, maybe it was at - infinite?

Now check again on your audio interface's Phones Out.

  • Hi Martin, thanks again...but still, same problem (Kempers headphone jack works fine by the way); but I just found out something else: There's a firmware update for the FCA, one of the bugfixes is: "OS X explicit feedback allows sync to external signals (SPDIF) (bug #10124)"; maybe this would solve the problem.
But the upgrade software from Behringer seems to be for Windows-Users only ?! Great support...I'm thinking about sending the FCA back an get the Focusrite 6i6 instead.

    From Gearslutz.com:

    Dear ...,
Unfortunately, there is not a Mac firmware updater planned at this time. The update improves the feel of the Main Volume and ADAT sync in FireWire mode

If you could provide some more details on your USB issues I would be happy to help troubleshoot, such as what OS and software you are using.

When in FireWire mode, the FCA will draw bus power even when the power adaptor is plugged in. A workaround is to use a 6 pin to 4 pin or 6 pin to 4 pin to 6 pin adaptor, as only the 6 pin cable provides bus power.
