Problem with bass / hum / ground loop

  • Hey everyone
First let me say that the Kemper is not the culprit here, but you guys on this forum are so helpful that I thought I might ask your opinion.

So, here is the story. I have a cheap bass from Thomann (http://www.thomann.de/fr/harley_benton_hot_rod_bass.htm). Sounds good but there is this hum which only stops when I touch the strings or a metal part. So I recently bought another bass from thomann, but this time active, thinking it would solve the issue (http://www.thomann.de/fr/harley_benton_hbz2005.htm). This one sounds massive through the Kemper but I have the same noise issue which makes it pretty useless for recording.

If I put a wire from the jack input to my foot, it really reduces the hum, but it's not very convenient.
I ve tried with a friend's Fender Jazzbass, and an active Cort. There is no hum (or at least it's not noticeable). And I have no problem with my guitars.

So I think it may be a shielding problem, and I will probably follow the tutorial here:
    http://www.notreble.com/buzz/2…-how-to-shield-your-bass/

Now there is one thing I don't understand. My home studio is in my basement and I only have this problem there (bass through Kemper and headphones for instance). If I play upstairs through the same setting, the bass is 100% silent.

So is the basement electric installation faulty, and how can I test it?
Do you think shielding the bass can reduce (or solve) the problem?

Thanks in advance for your help ^^

  • Hey Matt,

yes, it seems that your basement lacks a proper electric grounding.

Since the rest of your house (or at last the mains socket you tried) seem immune from the issue, it should be not difficult nor expensive to have the basement sockets grounded... I'd do it anyway, it makes things more secure for you and your family.

Try for a moment to connect the other end of that wire to a metal structure such as a tap if available: things should go even better

    :)
