Clocking to my kemper making my mixes more 3-d?

  • I just recently got my kemper and hooked it up to my Steinberg 816 sound card via s/pdif and am clocking to the kemper. I recorded some tracks to an old recording I was doing, and Im sure the mix is more open due to the awesome sound of the kemper but it also seems everything else has become more 3-d as well. Has anyone else experienced this?

  • The KPA currently can't lock to an external clock.
Thus, the pops/ticks you hear (when the audio interface clock is set to internal) are the result of mixing two digital audio streams with each on a separate clock.
This will happen with any two digital audio streams (not just the KPA) if they're running on separate clocks.
The solution is to make the Kemper the clock source (have the audio interface receive sync at its S/PDIF input).

Not all clock sources are created equal.
It's very possible that the KPA's clock is higher quality than the clock found in many low/mid range audio interfaces.
If that's the case, it would make sense that the audio sounds better upon playback (lower jitter).
