OT, but could I use a send from my hardware mixer, say channel 1 and insert it in to channel 2?
I need more eq on the recording (vocal) and the eq's on my mixer are nice but limited.

You can do that if you use a "pre-fader send", and leave the first channel's fader down (so the not-enough EQ version of the sound does not end up at the Master faders).
If you only have "post-fader" sends, you may want to use the output of the second channel, instead of the master faders.

The mixer is the Mackie Onyx 16 20 Firewire.
What do you reckon is the best approach with that model Paul?
Thanks -
I looked at: http://mackie.com/products/onyx-i-series
Since the Input channels have 4-band EQ with sweepable mids, and the Inserts have 3-Band EQ with sweepable mids, I think I would try a send from a channel to one of the returns - assuming the EQ points are all different, you would have 7-band EQ, with two sweepable mids

I haven't had a chance today Paul but I'll have a crack tomorrow and report back.

Using a send in to one of the return channels ended up with increased noise and pretty horrible.
Taking a send and plugging it straight in to track 2 worked very well. I just balanced the 2 channel levels to roughly 60/40, sounfs pretty good. Thanks Paul.

You're welcome!
