Profiling using a DI box?

  • Can good results be obtained by making profiles of amps without their cabinets, via a DI box and then applying an existing cabinet in the rig?

  • I've been using a Hot Plate's direct out with good results. I figured I'd cut my teeth that way and move up to microphones once I get the hang of profiling. It is also easy to capture cabs from other profiles.

  • Thanks for the kind words guitar net.
Yeah, I used the direct out on a palmer pdi03.
When you do it this way it is ideal for power amp/cab setups as you can dial in the amp prior to profiling using the actual power amp and cab you will be using when you playback, enabling you to nail the tone you are after right from the start.
The other advantage is silent or very quiet profiling even when running the amp being profiled at very loud settings for that power amp distortion..
You can always add one of the many available cabs later if you wish.
