So I set up a Royer 121 into my Electronaut M63 preamp tonight, and stuck the mic about 3 inches away at about a 30 degree angle as usual from my 3 Monkeys Orangutan combo. The sound was a mostly clean tone. I profiled it, and did some A/B-ing. I did refine the profile 3 times on the bridge pickup while strumming constantly, and what I ended up with, while in the same ballpark, was surprisingly bright compared to my amp, and less bass/mid articulate for sure. I wonder whether the constant hard strumming during the refining process continued to bring out the pick sound and add brightness - that is something I will get into tomorrow with more dynamic playing during the refining. I am not a fan of arbitrary quantifying, but if I had to, I would say that this tone was maybe 75% close to my original tone. I hope to get closer and of course will do plenty of experimenting tomorrow, and will be doing a full video/audio recording of the shootout by the end of the weekend since so many people are interested in seeing how this unit can potentially capture such dynamic amps as the ones we have here. I definitely was surprised that rather than being darker, the profile was on the brighter side. Anyhow, I look forward to mucking around a good deal more and seeing how it performs.
First quick profile experience...

You should be able to get closer than a perceived 75%. Keep at it.

How are you monitoring? If the amp is in the room with you A/B'ing is going to be more complicate because you hear the mic'd sound and the direct sound at the same time by A but only the Mic'd sound (profile) by B

The amp is in another room in an iso booth and I recorded both the amp and the KPA for listening back through my Barefoot MM27s...I was judging the recorded sounds, not the live playing.

Definitely! Just getting started here....

Fine, just asking...no offense intended

Of course! I appreciate the input.

So I just created my first profile with my KPA, with a single R121 - it was a clean setting on voice 3 of my 3 Monkeys Orangutan, which has a bit of breakup when strummed hard. I will say this - there is NO way I would know the KPA is digital by listening back to it. Dynamically speaking, it is as analog as anything I have ever heard. The way the notes fade out are also perfect - no artifacts whatsoever can I hear on this profile I made. Regarding how close it is to my amp, here are my thoughts.
1. The KPA is slightly more dynamic than the amp - when played soft to loud, the soft is softer than the amp by just a bit.
2. Tonally, on the soft playing, the KPA, at least for this profile, is a bit brighter/more alive sounding - I actually prefer it. To use a pedestrian term, it sounds more "hi-fi".
3. Here is the crazy part - when I play medium to hard, the breakup tone is - and I mean it - indistinguishable from the amp on almost every chord of the pattern I played. When doing a quick a/b between the amp track and KPA track with my eyes closed, quite often I could not even tell I was switching. This is only one profile of one amp at one setting. Of course there are WAY more that I will do, and I expect some varying results. But I can say this right away - this thing gets closer to the amp than I expected it would. Pretty badass. I will start a soundcloud page and upload some samples soon, and will be doing a video demonstrating some of this too. Just figured I would post some early thoughts in the meantime.

Great stuff! Don't forget to post the profile as well....if you're so kind to...

I had this problem when I created my first profile of my Hook Captain. It seemed to be down to the level that I was profiling at i.e. too quiet. Once I raised the level of the profiling tones through the speaker it fixed itself.

Definitely, will do! Gonna make some more now while I am at it - I will have some pretty sick ones to share with the community soon. -

Sorry to offrail this thread:
is the Captain Hook Profile available?
Thanks,
