Kemper Stage and Apollo Twin X via SPDIF

I know there have been similar threads about this but I haven't been able to find a conclusive answer. My mission is simple - rather than running the Kemper via Main (Kemper) > Line In (Apollo), I would like to go via SPDIF (Kemper) > Optical In (Apollo). I can confirm: it doesn't work.

Can anyone recommend a cable or adapter that will work for me to run the Kemper on the Apollo Twin X via SPDIF?

By level, do you mean the volume? Have you compared to analog? I.e. is it considerably lower than analog?
