With smartphones and browsers like Chrome for IOS and Android I can't really see much benefit in a dedicated mobile version of the forum.

There are apps for loading forums on smartphones in a "clear way", but don't know what kind of forum is this.. VB? maybe? SMF?
It's Woltlab Burning Board. There's a Tapatalk extension for this forum software available. Not sure about Forumrunner.
Works great on Android's stock browser. 99% of my participation is via mobile.

on my smartphone (huawei, a galaxy clone) the letters on the screen are very small, zooming und writing is uncomfortable.

Apps like tapatalk/Forumrunner make it easier to read trough forums (for example musiker-board).
It uses less internet traffic and it's much faster and it is also possible to upload photos or something!
