So I'm thinking of starting a commercial profile site where I profile commonly used (or at least, sought-after) worship amps (Jackson Scarlett 30, Morgan AC20, Matchless DC30, etc) and profile them by themselves and then, for each amp, have like 50 profiles with different boutique overdrive pedals (Klon KTR, Morning Glory, Mulholland Drive, TS808HW, King Of Tone, a couple of different versions of Scarlett Love, etc) at different gain and volume levels running into the amps at edge-of-breakup.

Would there be be a market for this? Does that sound intriguing?

Got it. So it doesn't really matter what can I have it connected to (as long as Impedence and wattage match) then I can take the direct amp profile and load it whatever can I want from the merged profiles I have, correct?

So I'm looking to do a number of Direct Profiles (I believe that's what they're called) of amp heads by connecting the speaker out of the amp to a dummy load with a line out and connecting that to the Kemper. Is this the best way to silently profile an amp head (with no speaker cabinet)?

I've heard running a dummy load can change the sound of the amp in a negative way, though. Is this true? Should I connect the amp head to a direct box that can handle the speaker load then put the Cab out of said DI box into a dummy load? would this work?

    thanks!

I run them both pretty clean, with mainly the king of tone in front for drive, and often a klon. Delays come from timefactor', reverbs from bigsky with small, medium, and large presets.

i would love to use the kemper's loop for my wet fx so I can use other gainer profiles, but it's too much of a pain to run a 2nd and 3rd cable across the stage for that.

I've actually been thinking of putting my Timeline and BigSky in a rack drawer so I can have them in the FX Loop and not run a bunch of cables across the stage to make it happen. Then I would just control them via a MIDI controller (my Disaster Area DMC-8D)

I didn't see another thread on here about this so I figured I'd start one. If you play in a church or are a P&W artist, what amps are you using?

I'll go first. Right now, I'm switching between:

    • MBritt Matchless SC30
    • MBritt Divided By 13 FTR37
    • A/M Bad Cat Black Cat

...all of them set pretty clean and I run my pedalboard into the Kemper for overdrives. What about you guys?

    -Paul

Out of curiosity, how many of you guys that have your Kempers in racks use external effects that are in sliding trays in your rack cases? I'm thinking of doing this with my Strymons (Timeline and BigSky), I just want to see how you guys are setting up yours to get an idea of how it can be done.

    Bonus for pictures!

    -Paul

I'm not a worship guitarist so have no idea about those tones you want. But I will say that external drives and delays are superior to the onboard ones in my experience. The onboard drive emulations are ok but nothing beats a real RAT or Big Muff into a good profile. Nor do the Kemper delays (which are OK) touch the weight of the Strymon stuff. That could be the 'sparkle' you are missing.

This. A thousand times this. Amps sound INSANE in the Kemper. Effects, compared to boutique pedals, are garbage in the Kemper.

Worship or not, that's the case in general.

Welcome Paul! I've been thinking it would be great to create some sort of community for Kemper using worship guitarists, somewhere that we can all pull together ideas, experiences, tips, etc for using the Kemper in our context. Maybe just a "Master" thread on here? Or a Facebook community? Thoughts?

Yes. Definitely. I'm surprised there's no Kemper Facebook group, worship or not (that I've found anyway). But yes, I think that would be a great idea.

Paul, you've learned in this very-short space of time what some of us never fully embrace. Sure, we're aware of the phenomenon, but somehow GAS sees us hankering after the next sparkling-new professional profile pack, manifesting a situation where many of us would surely be sitting on veritable goldmines... eating porridge and complaining that we can't afford to heat our tents...

Exactly. Nothing wrong with BUYING the new pack necessarily, but mentally thinking "I have SO many other ones I can try" is what's detrimental. It's the whole "paralysis by analysis" that accompanies having so many options. I like to pretend the "amp of the week" is the ONLY amp I own, just like it would be in real life.

All the sharing of experiences on here is great. Yesterday, while playing live, I used the MBritt Vox AC30 B1 profile, a guitar with p90s, an OCD pedal out front, a Strymon Timeline and Blue Sky in the X slot as a stereo loop, and bam...sounded incredible! It's the sound I was looking for, with all the benefits of plugging to the front of house. Thanks everyone for sharing the tips.

Awesome! I'm gonna need to try the AC30 B1 profile more. I think I breezed past it while trying the MBritt profiles (in retrospect, I probably should have bought the profiles a pack at a time and taken my time to learn each amp inside and out instead of buying all his profiles at once, lol!)

James Duke once said in an online interview that you should learn the gear you have inside and out before making a decision and buying something else. The same logic applies to amps in the Kemper. I think I personally need to slow down and play each amp exclusively for a weekend service before writing any of them off.

Alright, so I really want to be able to use my Dosaster Area DMC-8D to control the amps on my Kemper via PC messages but am not sure how to set it up. When I engage presets on the DMC device while it's hooked up via MIDI (daisy chained using DMC -> BigSky -> Timeline -> Kemper) it pulls up different amps in the first two performance rigs. I really want to be able to program it in so I can control what's being pulled up. How do I do this? Do I need to put the Kemper on a specific MIDI channel? Is that even possible?

    -Paul

Welcome Paul . . . . I'm curious if you have kept the AX8 or not. I'm a few days away from an invite to buy one and was wondering what your impression of it was/is. I'm very happy with my KPA and love the way it sounds and responds. I hope yours makes you happy.

Sold it. It didn't have the same feel as the KPA to me. Put it up for sale within a day of owning both

Interesting thread. I also see that this session/worship guitarist also switched to a Kemper, and he notes that he primarily uses MBritt profiles as well....looks like most are from profile pack 2:

Ok, so I was reading this guy's blog and it turns out, this is the guy I saw live playing with Martin Smith! It was this guy's tones that inspired me to get the Kemper. Small world.

Thanks for the link to that blog! Cool to see a touring worship guitarist and how they approach tone with the Kemper and pedals.

Yeah, I've tried a bunch of the overdrives, delays and reverbs in the Kemper and wasn't into any of them, really.

Right now, I'm contemplating running the drives and compressor on the pedalboard in front of me and putting the BigSky and Timeline in a rack drawer adjacent to the Kemper so I don't have to run as many cables back and forth for the FX Loop.

Nice pedalboard. I've gone the opposite way since owning the kemper and built in effects seem to be getting better and better. Just waiting for some of the new delays. I've sold many of the pedals you have and for our other guitarist we are building a…

Cool! Yeah, other than the ones you mentioned, there's the Selah Scarlett Love v1 which is an amazing Plexi/808 style overdrive (Nigel's signature pedal) and the JHS's are a JHS-recased Micro POG and an Angry Charlie (which is now replaced by a Walrus Deep Six Compressor)

the Disaster Areas are cool. The one on the right connects to all my dry effects so I can manually control which are in the signal chain. The one of the left creates presets that control the one on the right AND my Strymons. I'm currently figuring a way it can also change my amps on my Kemper, too (based on what part of the song, etc)

I'm using Michaels profiles as well at church. The 3P blackface clean is great and takes boost/overdrives really well. I use the Marshall SL3 a LOT and the XITS50 for tighter/brighter rhythm parts. Throw in the occasional Dumble or Friedman/CAE PT for…

Hmmm..I'm gonna need to try the 3P Blackface a little more....but I agree, the XITS is good for the tighter/brighter rhythm parts!

    and I use in-ears to monitor (1964 V6-Stages)

Welcome Paul! Mic up your SC30 with it set just the way you like it &gt; Profile it &gt; <img src="http://www.kemper-amps.com/forum/wcf/images/smilies/thumbup.png" alt="" /> good to go with your signature tone.

To be honest, I trust Michael Britt's mic placement and EQ'ing skills more than my own so I don't really care if the SC30 (for example) being modeled doesn't sound exactly like my SC30. I care that it creates a great, inspiring guitar tone that's reminiscent of an SC30. I care more about it inspiring me to play more and to play better than to sound exactly like one.

Not to hijack your thread, but I'm curious to the worship artists here including yourself, which Britt profiles you're using live and with what guitar and pickup. Lots of love goes his way but the few I tried didn't suit me. Big fan of amp factory…

Absolutely! I'm curious what other worship guitarists are using, too! My guitars are a Duesenberg Fullerton Elite and a Gretsch Sparkle Jet. I'm not using any of the built-in effects. Just running my pedalboard into it (pictured below).

And I've been running it into these profiles mainly (mostly the first two):

    • Tyler HM30
    • Naylor ND60
    • Matchless SC30
    • XITS X50S
    • 3rd Power (Plexi mode)

Alright, so I'm new to using the Kemper but not new to digital guitar units. I've owned the AxeFX Ultra, II and AX8 (obviously very recently) over the past 5 years and kept going back to tube amps because of the feel and texture of them. The AFX never really captured the subtle nuances of an amp for me, so I kinda gave up on Fractal and went back to my amps (right before switching to the Kemper, I was using a Matchless SC30 and a Bad Cat Black Cat 30R).

Then my church hosted a Martin Smith concert and I watched as he and his lead guitar player got INCREDIBLE tone from their Kempers and I thought ok, if it's good enouigh for him, I should probably try to make it work. Bought a Kemper and was ASTOUNDED at the texture and feel!! It got even better when I tried mpacheco's AC20 patch.

And then the biggest jump was trying MBritt's profiles. I tried a couple of them and they had texture, feel and they fit well in a mix. I have since bought all of MBritt's offerings and am making my way through them, trying them all out and making patches to use live.

My church (C3 San Diego) does all kinds of worship songs including Hillsong Young and Free, Bethel Music, Jesus Culture, etc and the Kemper not only has the flexibility to keep up with everything, but also the quality that keeps up with tube amps. Does the Matchless SC30 profile sound exactly like my mic'd up SC30? It sounds scarily close, but not 100%. But do any DC30/SC30's sound 100% exactly like each other? Probably not. But it has the same quality sound as that amp and that's what really matters to me. Not just replicating tone, but creating your own tone, your signature sound.

And I really feel like the Kemper can do this and I'm excited to see what else this thing can do as I learn more about it!

    -Paul Anderberg

Alright, so I have this idea of having delay and reverb (Strymon Timeline and BigSky) as external effects for my Kemper and want to run them very last (not in the FX Loop, in case I want to run something else in there). Would I be able to run the 1/4" main outputs to the Timeline and BigSky and then run a separate stereo Radial DI out to FOH? Would there be any downside to doing this? Would quality suffer at all?

    Thanks!

    -Paul
